Could not agree more Jim with the talent the Buckeyes have this year is see another Big Ten Championship and a defeat of Michigan. GO BUCKEYES
Here’s a great article by the NY Times. This should make everyone feel just a little bit better.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/14/sports/ncaafootball/ncaas-investigation-of-auburn-isnt-over-yet.html?_r=3
This may be a pretty big hurdle for tOSU to overcome. It is never easy to bring on a new coach with new offensive/defensive ideas …. and you have some guys sitting out the beginning of the season. Although these early matches are push-overs, your guys will lose valuable game experience in a new system. I think we can all agree ….. at this point in their careers ….. Fickell is a step down from JT. It will make it for a very interesting year at tOSU.
tBBC has a great analysis of recent NCAA violations and penalties. Sort of puts it all in perspective: http://www.thebuckeyebattlecry.com/2011/07/compare-and-contrast-ncaa-allegations/
Although as I’ve been saying all along, perspective is exactly what is needed. Ohio State has two incidents in one sport resulting in violations — both of which were self-reported.
Other schools:
USC – 10
North Carolina – 9
Tennessee – 12
Boise State – 22 violations in 5 sports
Georgia Tech – 8
Auburn – $180,000
Actually, they’ve only been caught that many times. Are you saying you know for a fact this is the only time Jim Tressell ever lied about anything concerning his players with the NCAA, or is this the only time he’s ever had to do it? Does anyone really know?
You’re right, perception is everything.
Oh. I see. Because I can’t prove to you that Coach Tressel has never lied about anything he must be guilty of other violations.
I can’t prove to you that the average Arkansas fan doesn’t abuse small children but I’m not going to expect to see them punished for it either.
Your perception has nothing to do with it other than the fact that people like you seem to think that guilty until proven innocent is an acceptable situation.
Jim, I agree with you …… this needs to be put into perspective. I don’t think any of us really know how deep this will go until tOSU meets with the NCAA in August. I also don’t think that you should be promoting the fact that this was “self reported”. It sounds good but is very misleading.
I also heard about “average Akansas fans abusing small children”. The fact that we are hearing about this in separate parts of the country really makes think that there is some legitimacy in this claim.
Don’t be so touchy on the subject Jim. You’re starting to sound like Casey Anthoney’s defense lawyer.
No need to get pissed off, just because I’m laughing at your story line.
I’m not pissed off. I’m just pointing out the fallacy in your statement. “Perception” is exactly the problem. Too many people, media included, have gone from perspective to perception. There is a desire to see Ohio State fall that is skewing the reality of the situation.
And seeing that the small children abuse situation is raising it’s ugly head on both coasts, my perception is that there must be more to the story.
Exactly. “More to the story” is the very phrase I was thinking of when looking at OSU’s situation.
The problem with you is you’re wrong in believing I’ve bought into the concept of “guilty until proven innocent”.
That’s a laughable suggestion, considering I’ve been pretty much right on target with everything that has happened at OSU, which most likely dates back to somewhere around March. Disagree?
I wonder why that is? Could it be my unbiased why of looking at this situation without the rose colored glasses, compared to an unbelievably biased fan base? Naaaaw…..surely that couldn’t be it. That would be the wrong perception too now wouldn’t it?
How ironic is this ….. Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino released a statement to the press when he dismissed Anthony Oden (Greg Odens little brother) for getting a DWI on Saturday. Two days later his son, Dominic gets a DWI and Bobby tells the media “the arrest of his son on DWI and drug charges is a family and legal matter and doesn’t concern the Razorback football team”and “The coach said in a message to The Associated Press that he and his wife won’t comment further about the incident.” Why would Bobby release a statement to the press about one and not the other? Is it because Anthony Oden is a “public figure” and Dominic a “private figure”?
Athletes with criminal records is pretty much the status quo for Patrino. He ranked 3rd highest in the country for players with criminal records just this spring (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/the_bonus/02/27/cfb.crime/index.html).
Of course, this doesn’t include his time at Louisville.
But then again, my perception is probably wrong. 18 players with criminal history isn’t really all that many – at least not in the SEC.
Yep, that’s true. He has all kinds of felons just begging to sign up.
Guys getting DWIs, guys getting caught with a doobie in their dorm room, public intoxications,…wow! we’re talking some serious crimes here.
I bet they never do that in Columbus. Then again, since the players are so “special” up there in Columbus, and everyone just wants to be so close to them, that probably includes the traffic cops as well, right? Is that the right perception?
Wow ….. I can’t believe what your saying here Gonzo. So, if it is true that Bobby has all kinds of felons begging to play ball for him ….. he must be recruiting them. I think this says volumes about him as a coach. If he goes after “all kinds of felons” I guess “character” isn’t a quality that he/Arkansas values. This is truley enlightening to me. I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised ….. Bill Clinton is from Arkansas.
Now I know why you call yourself “Quacking Duck”. Thanks for enlightning me. I guess I shouldn’t be suprised though…..Oregon is connected to the homosexual dominated state that carried Bill Clinton in his presidential election.
It probably has something to do with Dominic not being a member of the team. That was last year. He’s 23 years of age now.
More than likely, I’d say that makes it a family issue, rather than a team issue. You know, the kind that isn’t supposed to be on display, but will be anyway?
Here’s the full story:
http://www.arkansassports360.com/25790/bobby-petrinos-son-arrested-in-indiana-on-drug-charges
Gonzo Hog – my point being – Isn’t Anthony Oden “someones son”?? If broadcasting to the media is okay for him to do for Anthony ….. why not Dominck?
Just a thought …… I have been hearing that Arkansas fans abuse small children. Do you think that Dominick may have been abused as a child and it has led to his drug and alcohol problems? There looks to be a logical connection here.
Gonzo … I read my post and don’t think I clearly stated myself. Here is Bobby’s statement to the press re: Dominick.
“Nick is our son, he is not a member of the Arkansas football team. As such, this is not a University of Arkansas issue. Instead, it is a family matter and a legal matter. My family will trust and respect the legal system and will not comment outside that process. Becky and I ask that you appreciate and respect the private nature of this issue and understand our lack of further comment.”
Here is his press release re: Oden.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The following statement is from University of Arkansas
football head coach Bobby Petrino: “Anthony Oden has been dismissed from
the Arkansas football team due to a violation of team rules. Although he is no
longer a member of our team, the athletic department will support him.”
If he will repremand Oden publicly then why would he not repremand his own son the same way?
Unbelievable. He isn’t a member of the team, but should be treated as such?
Please listen closely and try very, very, hard to understand, Tony.
Bobby Petrino is the head football coach of the University of Arkansas. (a state funded institution) Anthony Oden was a member of that team, who by the way, was competing for a starting position as an OT.
He was very clearly going to be an important peice of the Razorback offense come fall.
Now, as you should be aware of by now, young Mr. Petrino is no longer a member of the football team or a student of the U of A. Are we clear on this?
There is no difference between you or I, compared to Dominic, screwing up in Indiana? Understand? There’s nothing to repremand here by Coach Bobby Petrino, but if you choose to believe so regardless, there’s certainly nothing I can do for you.
Here’s a few self-reported violations. Guess who’s next?

Looks like the worst is over for tOSU. New report says that the NCAA will not hit you with the most serious violations….
http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/NCAA-wont-hit-Ohio-State-with-failure-to-monitor-charge-072211
I guess you guys can let out your breath now. I am sure that the NCAA will add a few more penalties tou your self imposed sanctions and then call it a day.
@Gonzo ….. as info ….. I was just messin with you. You were going after the Nuts relentlessly and I wanted to divert your attention for a while. Although I was a bit surprised at how many felons are on your team. Maybe Masoli can come back for one more year and replace Mallet?
Congrats to OSU. It looks like the NCAA isn’t out for you after all. Hope you’re able to make the best of it.
Tony, nothing personal, just a bit suprised you jumped on that bandwagon so quikly.
As for Mallett’s replacement, college football is in for a big suprise in 2011. No one is gonig to believe how good his replacement is, until they see it for themselves.
Didn’t jump on the bandwagon …… Just wanted to turn the attack onto Arkansas and let you play defense for awhile. LOL
No problem.
