Twelve hours of College Bowl games in one day. As good as that may sound, by the time the Rose Bowl rolls around, there may not be much left of me (not too mention the wife will be yelling for me to get up off the couch and do something).
Hey, it only happens once a year, better enjoy it while you can. Break out the chicken wings and nachos, here’s a New Year’s day worth of Bowl predictions and incredibly biased commentary (along with a healthy dose of smack).
Outback Bowl: Tennessee vs. Penn State
Let’s just start out by saying that the SEC needs to worry about Big Ten Speed. You heard me, BIG TEN SPEED. Florida is going to learn about it next week and Penn will be able to keep up with Tennessee today. JoPa needs to send down word from the press box that they need to keep Tenn down early and run, run, run the ball down Tennessee’s throat. If the Lions can keep the turnovers down and slow down the Vol offense, they have a chance. Unfortunately, Penn State has had a problem with big games this year and I don’t have much faith in them today.
Tennessee wins today in a low scoring game.
Cotton Bowl: Auburn vs Nebraska
I really don’t care much about this game other than I want to see the SEC lose another bowl game. Nothing could make me happier than to see the SEC go down big today proving once and for all that they are not the best league in the nation. We are all sick of hearing about SEC Speed and this will be another chance to prove it.
However, of the SEC teams, I like Auburn. Don’t ask me why, I don’t have a reason. Auburn is missing a couple of key players but they should hang in there.
Score I’d like to see: Nebraska 28, Auburn 12.
Score we’ll really see: Auburn 28, Nebraska 21
Capital One Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Arkansas
Ok, you’re guess is as good as mine here. What has Wisconsin done this season to earn their #7 ranking. They lost their only big game to Michigan and their non conference games consisted of Bowling Green, Western Illinois, San Diego State and…get this…Buffalo. Now matter what the BCS polls say, they are unproven.
At the same time, did you see the Florida Arkansas game. Can you say sloppy?! Both teams look a little better than a high school conference champ. Wisconsin will win today only because I say they will. They are from the Big Ten and the SEC will have trouble keeping up with the Big Ten defense today. Wisconsin lead the Big Ten in Big D this year and they will shut down Arkansas.
ESPN agrees and their Accusore Simulator, whatever that is, is predicting a Wisconsin win.
Gator Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. West Virginia
West Virginia wins in a blow out. Georgia Tech is an ACC team that didn’t even make it to the championship and West Virginia can run the ball.
Moving on…
Loser…I mean Rose Bowl: Michigan vs. USC
Hype it as much as you want. Draw on all the tradition and history you can, neither team wants this bowl game. However, it is good to see an old school bowl game and if the BCS doesn’t get it’s act together, I recommend going back to the old way of doing things. The PAC ten plays the Big Ten champion in the Rose and the big ten settles everything when Ohio State plays Michigan in Nov.
As for today’s game, Michigan should make it a blow out. However, I don’t have much faith in them. They are Michigan after all and Lllllloyd Cooper is coaching the game. USC was way overrated this year. They didn’t play any real competition and did lose two. Be honest here, beating Notre Dame didn’t prove anything.
If anyone has anything to prove, it’s Michigan. If win big, they will try to claim national the national championship…no matter how badly Ohio State beats Florida. They are convinced they got the shaft from everything from the field condition in the shoe, to the refs not allowing a helmet shot to Troy Smith to biased BCS voters to whatever else they can think of.
Prove it today Michigan. If you don’t win and win big, you just plain out suck.
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. Boise State
If you don’t root for the underdog in this one, you never will. Oklahoma is favored by 7 points or so but I’d love to see Boise win just if for no other reason than to keep the BCS interesting. Little Boise is finally getting a chance at a big game after winning 80+ games in the last five years. Boise plays today for all the conferences that get left out by the mighty BCS. If Boise gets blown out today, it could slow down the BCS hopes of top WAC, Mountain West, or Conference USA team. However, a win by Boise and the wrench could fall right back into next year’s BCS formula.
Expect Oklahoma to win but down deep don’t tell me you don’t want to see Boise at least break the spread.
