Troy Smith; A Heisman Story

by Annapolisbuckeye on December 9, 2006

On ESPN.com, Pat Forde provides an in depth look at Troy Smith and the long road that has lead him to this Saturday’s Heisman trophy. For all of my frustrations with ESPN, especially when it comes to Ohio State, Forde gains back a lot of ground with this one.

For those of us who have followed Smith’s career at Ohio State, I never would have predicted that it would turn out like this. When Smith first appeared on the scene, I was frustrated with Tressel and what seemed an inability to settle on one quarterback to lead the team.

Then there were the off-field problems but boy, was it fun to watch Smith scramble on the field.

And then came the 2006 season. This was not the same Troy Smith of three years ago. Suddenly the quarterback who could turn a broken plays into touchdowns was standing deep in the pocket, calmly threading the needle to make the perfect pass. Last seasons leading rusher was now holding firm and getting the job done through the air.

Then came the press conferences. This wasn’t some brash young punk. Smith presented himself as a class act. He always talked about the team first and I was proud to see him out front as an Ohio State Buckeye.

And as the season went on, we learned more and more about Smith’s background and how Tedd Ginn’s father took him in and helped Smith when he needed it most. It turns out, Ginn wasn’t the only one there to help.

Forde’s article provides the full story of Smith’s upbringing. The young man who will step to the podium in New York Saturday night, has overcome some amazing obstacles and has had some amazing individuals there to help along the way.

Troy Smith will go down in the annuals of Ohio State football as one of the greats and his story is should serve as an inspiration to all.
