Yeah, I've had some time to think about it. No question the Buckeyes struggled with play calling in both Phoenix and in AZ.

I think the Buckeye defense gets too conservative falling back on the zone instead of doing what they do best - pressure the quarterback. As a result, the spread offense picks them apart.

Put the pressure on, which the Ohio State defense can do, and the spread quickly falls apart.

As a buckeye fan I would also like to look at the play calling much less then the penalties. Penalties do hurt to a certain extent but I still feel that those penalties were not the main reason why we lost. I don't know if you seen the Eddie George interview in Toledo Ohio but he boldly claimed that Ohio State was out coached defensively and offensively. Imo Ohio State was only out coached defensively. Since 2006 since we first faced Florida a true spread team we were blown out.. same thing happened with Illinois its not merely a coincidence and bad penalties that made us loose to LSU. If you watched the Illinois game it almost felt like it was foreshadowing the NC game against LSU. Jim Heacock has been the thorn in Ohio States game play defensively. If you look at our defensive line (DEFENSIVE TACKLES) it looks like there playing paddy cake most of the time unlike when we had Mark Dantonio the defensive line would constantly put pressure and and blitz. But instead we run a zone coverage scheme which quarterbacks in the spread offense pick apart year in and year out. The zone coverage is good against classical offenses that don't utilize the spread but when it comes time to face the spread we get blown out. If Jim Heacock doesn't adapt we will see the same results and more looses. I don't believe we overachieved I am sick of hearing that if you cant take the heat and win in a big time football conference and when it comes to the big dance then you should pack up and leave there is no excuse for these two poor consecutive performances.
