Great Moments in Mascot History: The Oregon RoboDuck

by Annapolisbuckeye on December 8, 2009

They may have beaten Stanford that day but they lost so much more. Straight from the land of overly overt sponsorship, I give you the Nike designed, Broadway influenced RoboDuck:

All part of their plan to take over the world my friends. Not so much a mascot as a marketable action figure.

Annapolis, To put this into perspective. This is very old footage of a very bad idea. This Robo Duck did not go over well with the fans…..and he quickly exited the scene. Oregon loses quite a bit of money each year because of “Donald Duck”. His marketing is controlled by Walt Disney and Oregon was trying to make a good business decision by tapping into a new revenue stream with this Robo Duck. A few students got in trouble a few weeks ago because they posted a song on youtube that had Donald in the video… Here is the link to the video ….. actually pretty good for a couple of college kids.

Obviously Robo Duck was a terrible idea.

I hear you about being a slave to Disney. I know of high school yearbooks who have been sued for using Disney characters without paying licensing fees.

However, even if it is old and outdated. Even if it did fail miserably. There is something deep in the Oregon psyche, something in the wiring of the Oregon fan that told somebody, somewhere that this might actually work.

And while many see this as a strange anomaly, for those of us on the outside, it seems like a natural fit for a team sporting the uniform of the week. You should have seen the uproar around Buckeye Nation when it was announced that Ohio State would wear “throwback” uniforms for one game. Even though they were put out under the guise of a “tribute” to a great team of old.

All that aside, that video is classic in so many ways. You think I’m letting you off the hook that easy. Every line screams parody. This could be a hit on SNL or the Onion and nobody know the difference.

I just watched the video. Yeah, it’s well produced but I’m not sure it’s helping your case.

This is more the style that makes an Ohio State fan’s blood boil. (There’s lots of these — all based on tradition, excellence, script Ohio, that sort of thing).

Deliverance: A Redemption Sequel

Don’t take any of this as an offense Tony. It’s just a difference I’m trying to put my finger on. I’m enjoying your perspective. If you were a Michigan fan of course, all offense would be intended.

Greetings Buckeyes….I have four tickets on the 10 yards line…row 40. They are in Buckeye territory. I am looking for a Buckeye fan with four similar tickets in the Duck sections. I would like to trade tickets so we can both enjoy the friendly confines of our own fans……write me at: russ at addirector dot com.

It was a dark day for the Oregon faithful. Sometimes we need a moment like that to truly appreciate what we have. I’ll take our overweight Oregon Duck any day!!

Okay I am a recent graduate from Oregon, and I can tell you that never in my tenure at the school was that robo duck thing every used. That was before my time and I’ve already graduated.

By the way, GO AHEAD AND HATE ON THAT GUY! That was a terrible idea that deserves to be ridiculed. I am very glad they decided to get rid of that fool before I even got there. And know as a duck fan, I share your opinion about that robo goof.

From the moment Roboduck arrived, it was booed even more than some of the worst mascot ideas in history, on par with the San Francisco Crab.
With each appearance the anger grew larger from the fans, resulting in Roboduck being pelted with garbage whenever it showed up.

Within a couple months of this initial appearance, during halftime of a basketball game Roboduck and Donald had a slam dunk competition…Despite Roboduck being much more agile, according to fan reaction the Duck defeated Roboduck in the slamdunk contest, and thankfully Roboduck was never seen or heard from again. Some say Roboduck still haunts the ancient corrdiors and backrooms of Mac Court, contemplating what might have been had it only won that slamdunk contest and didn’t aggravate and sicken every Duck fan that endured its grotesque appearance for a couple months in 2002.

Oh, and at least neither Donald nor Roboduck ever walked around wearing a loin cloth…seriously Brutus, that’s just wrong.

We (all Ducks) agree the roboduck was a dumb idea, so hate at will. We already have Donald, the most beloved Duck of all time. We did not need or appreciate the Duck Action Figure For Youth (Daffy). As for the uniforms, our tradition is breaking all traditions and keeping in new and hip. Oldsters may not like but many young guys do.

p.s. Do not mess with Donald. He’ll crack your nuts (see youtube). What the hell is with your mascot, the most feminine nut of all time?
