One Bowl week gone, bring on the real bowl games.

by Annapolisbuckeye on January 1, 2007

Let me just start by saying that this year’s bowl schedule really sucks. The BCS games are on Monday and Tues nights. I don’t know about the rest of the word but I go back to work on Tues after a long week of watching Bowl games I really don’t care much about. Even worse is the fact that the BCS Championship is on a Monday night, the week after everybody had a week off. That means in order to travel to the game, fans will need to take at least two days off of work right after the holidays.

OK, I’ll make the sacrifice.

As for the Bowl games so far, there are a couple of highlights to mention.

Biggest story you won’t hear about: Meinke Car Care Bowl
While everyone is going crazy about the Boston’s game winning kick by a walk on who spent the early years of his college career in the stands, it was sad to see one of the most successful Navy classes in recent history lose such a close one.

This year’s graduating class from Annapolis was the first in school history to go 8-0 against Army and Navy. In a day when many college football players are only buying time for the pros, it would have been great to see our Mids go out with a bowl win.

Lose big, lose job
How about Minnesota? Somewhere in the middle of the third quarter, I fell asleep or turned of the T.V. or something confident in a Big Ten bowl win as Minnesota lead Texas Tech by 31 points. Next thing I know, the Gophers give up the biggest lead in bowl history and Minnesota is looking for a new coach.

Maybe Glen Mason and Michigan State’s John Smith can go to warmer climes and coach Alabama.

Big Two/Little nine maintain status quo
It is so frustrating to see the little nine put up such crappy bowl performances. I mean come on guys, pull a little weight here.

So far, Purdue, Iowa and Minnesota have tossed their bowl dreams out the window. Iowa played a good game but for the Gophers to quit in the middle of the third quarter and Purdue losing to Maryland, it is a little too much for me to take. I mean come on…Maryland? Did Purdue even show up?

Most over-hyped game that should be a blowout
Let’s face it, the loser…I mean Rose bowl should be a blowout. Talk about tradition all you want, this game is a consolation prize no matter how you wrap it. Michigan should absolutely destroy USC. However, this is Michigan and they are still coached by Llllloyd Carr. He is pretty good at choking at the most inappropriate of times. But hey, that’s why us Buckeye fans like him so much isn’t it.

All for now, I can’t afford to miss any more of that thriller in Boise. It’s New Year’s eve so I will try post my thoughts on the New Year’s games by the crack of noon tomorrow.
