Heading to the Game? A Guide to Drowning Your Sorrows in Lincoln

Editor’s Note: Every now and then I get requests to guest post on this blog. The post below comes from our friends at SportsTraveler.net who contacted me and offered to provide travel information for Buckeyes heading to Lincoln for the big game. Seeing as how this will be our first trip to Nebraska and unlike most schools in the Big Ten, the landscape may be a bit unfamiliar, I thought we’d give them a shot.

Tips For Buckeye Fans Traveling To Lincoln

Are you thinking about heading to Lincoln to see the Buckeyes take on the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers?  If so, then here are a few points of interest for anyone traveling to Lincoln this year.  The corn fed peoples of Nebraska love their University and their football team, but it isn’t the only thing that brings tremendous value to the Lincoln area.

Nebraska plays in one of the many stadiums around the country that carries the name Memorial Stadium.  This particular Memorial Stadium was built in 1923 and has been expanded six different times most recently  in 2006.  The stadium seats around 81,000 people and is located only a few blocks from the downtown Lincoln area.

Downtown Lincoln features many of the best attractions that this Nebraskan city has to offer—the Haymarket District.  This section of the city is a tribute to the bustling early days of the area and continues to be a thriving neighborhood.   There are several great bars and restaurants to be found that are local favorites.  For those of you who enjoy the bar scene, the CVB in Lincoln suggests 2 bars (Lazlo’s Brewery, Brewsky’s) that offer a great atmosphere and delicious food.

Lazlo’s Brewery is a locally based restaurant and bar that is located on North 7th Street.  Lazlo’s is a full service brewery with a full menu and offers a nice selection of house-brewed beers that’s includes the award winning LunaSea ESB.  If you are hungry you can enjoy tasty burgers, steaks, or grilled chicken that is all prepared on a special hickory grill.

Brewsky’s Food and Spirits is located on North 8th Street and this is a great place to watch a football game or any sporting event.  You will find your regular selection of bar food and a full list of domestic and import beers.  The bar also has a large patio area where you can enjoy nice weather, and if you are still ready for more excitement after the game then wander downstairs to the piano bar!

It is no mystery that Nebraska is a beef state and Misty’s Steakhouse is one the best places in the state to get beef.  Misty’s is located just a few blocks south of the downtown area and is a short 15 minute walk from Memorial stadium.  This popular steakhouse also comes highly recommended by many locals and the Lincoln CVB.  You can enjoy a succulent filet and wash it down with one of their five classic microbrews.

Special Note: If you happen to be in Lincoln on Saturday morning then you might want to check out the local Farmer’s Market.

If you are looking for something to do outside of eating or drinking then look to one of the shopping malls in Lincoln or visit one the many museums in the Lincoln area.  The University of Nebraska State Museum is located only a few minutes from Memorial Stadium and has a wide range of exhibits that includes amphibians, weapons of the past, and evolution.  Also, if you are traveling with children then you won’t want to miss an opportunity to visit the Lincoln Children’s Museum or the Lincoln Children’s Zoo.

Tour de Corn, partly sunny and 80 degrees. Haymarket area is a good place. Cornhusker fans are kind, friendly and respective. These people know their football. Went to a pregame tailgate with the Rocky Mountain Alumni Association and then to the Buckeye Bash. Headed to a NE tailgate with one of the doctors I call on in Omaha. Then on to the stadium. OSU friends should take note. NE fans don’t boo teams running on to field.
