As my colleague Scott pointed out in his report from the Ohio State Spring Game, one of the most interesting and perhaps the most insightful moments of the day occurred before the game even started as players when head to head in a heavily padded version of sumo wrtestling. And without question, the most interesting and most insightful moment of the drill was when starting quarterback Braxton Miller squared off against backup quarterback Kenny Guiton.

Facing a season without championship or even bowl hopes, for a few moments we got to see first hand the intensity and excitement that 2012 will bring. With all the controversy brought on by the rankings and the BCS, bring back old school football I always say. Football where nothing matters as much as beating Michigan and there is only one bowl game, the Rose. For this season at least, we will get a taste of that vision (like it or not) and from what we saw in the opening of the day, it looks like the Buckeyes are up for the task.

Miller Growing Into Role
After watching the Buckeyes spend the last 11 or so games attempting to pound the ball up the middle (again and again), it was good to see starting quarterback Braxton Miller developing as a passer. Yes, there is still concern regarding some of the decision making which both worked and didn’t work so well. Watching him deliver some impressive passes on the run however, you can see that his passing game has come along way since last season.

As it was pointed out many times by the BTN commentators, Miller has been throwing 70+ passes a day. If he continues at this level, he can do nothing but improve by fall. Meyer has also made it very clear that he doesn’t feel that Miller is there yet. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Meyer gives Miller an A on his release point and a B or C on accuracy.

What we didn’t get to see was the Miller scramble/run that could very well be the X factor in the Ohio State offense. During the spring game you could see Miller itching to spin out and pull a Terrell Pryor sprinting down the field. The big difference between Pryor and Miller is that Miller is much further along as a passer than Pryor was as a sophomore. He also appears to have the ability to keep eyes down field and maintain potential passing opportunities on the broken play.

Kenny Guiton a Good Backup for Miller
I liked what I saw from Kenny Guiton in the 2011 spring game and I like what I see from him again this year. He’s got a style very similar to Miller and you can sense that he’s got a healthy dose of potential. Unlike a Joe Bauserman/Miller (or Pryor) combination, the Buckeyes won’t need a completely different play book when Guiton comes on the field. Along with a going a decent 17 for 26 passing for a 191 yards, Guiton also demonstrated the potential to scramble out of a broken play and make the pass.

Guiton also demonstrated that he’s getting into the Meyer style offense as he gave us a couple of peeks a the hurry up offense. Although it looks as though his offensive line still needs to catch on, Guiton was able to catch the defense off guard on at least one play late in the game. That same play also gave us the chance to see him spin out on a broken play (hello O-line, I’m taking the ball) and salvage yards.

What We Didn’t See
Seeing the emphasis Meyer put on the passing game, we can assume that he is happy with the running game at this point (and he has said as much). He’s got speed in Miller and Jordan Hall, who didn’t even dress, could form the foundation of lethal stable of multi-talented running backs with the potential to do some serious damage to the Big Ten.

Although I’m still a fan of Big 10 style threeyardsandacloudof football, at some point even a successful Jim Bollman offense gets frustrating (not to mention the emotions associated with an unsuccessful Bollman offense). Meyer has said that this is still Ohio State and that we can expect to see a solid running game come fall. Unlike 2011 however, not only will there be the threat of a passing game (which was non-existent at times last year), we should actually have a solid passing game in place.

It will be interesting to see how the Meyer offense plays in the Big Ten but his impact could have the potential to significantly change football in the Big 10.

As for Meyer
Readers of this blog know that I’m struggling with Urban Meyer as coach. His circle drill and singing of Carmen Ohio are helping but I can’t get over the idea that he’s doing it because he knows what has to be done at Ohio State. James Lauranitis did bring me one step further down the path of acceptance with his sideline comments during the game. Lauranitis said that Meyer called him and a number of Buckeye alumni and welcomed them to the spring game. According to Lauranitis, Meyer “gets it” and understands the importance of tradition at Ohio State.

During the television broadcast we also saw two other images that helped again guided me down that path toward Meyer acceptance. Meyer opened recent practice sessions to both Ohio State students and Ohio coaches and when the weather turned bad, he brought them right into the indoor practice facility to watch close up. What a great picture to see students and fans standing about 20 feet from what looks like a full contact kicking practice.

As I said in a comment on an earlier post, in the words of Jules Winnfield, “I’m trying Ringo. I’m trying real hard…”

Over 80 thousand Buckeye fans braved the elements at Saturday’s spring game to get an early taste of what the 2012 Ohio State football team has to offer.

But I don’t want to talk about the game or be one of those people that gets too caught up in how one or two players stand out in a split squad scrimmage game. I want to discuss what occurred about ten minutes before the game started.

Both the Scarlet and the Gray team huddled around the Block O at midfield to participate in a lively version of the Oklahoma drill – where teammates line up one-on-one and basically go at each other like human rhinoceroses. The coaches and players were running around hooting and hollering and genuinely cared about who won each drill. It didn’t matter that the competitors were technically teammates come fall – for those ten seconds they were competing for pride, respect, and their fellow teammates on their half of the circle. Nothing else mattered.

This is exactly what the 2012 Ohio State team will be playing for – pride and respect. There is no Rose Bowl or Big Ten Championship to play for this year, and some (including myself) have worried about where the motivation will come from for the players. Worry no more. This new coaching staff has instilled a competitive spirit amongst the Scarlet and Gray ranks that was palpable throughout the stadium during this drill.

The final competitors were Braxton Miller and Kenny Gution. Yes, you read that right. New coach Urban Meyer threw his prized starting quarterback in the middle of what seemed like a blood thirsty circle of football players to ram himself full speed against the backup quarterback. All this was to warm up for the spring game. In April.

Those in the crowd who had found their seats caught on quickly to what was happening and loved it. In fact, if it didn’t get your blood flowing with excitement for the new season, you either need to see a doctor or are a scared Michigan fan. What’s more, I have never played a down of competitive football in my life, and I wanted to jump right into the middle of the ring. I would imagine that any high school recruit worth their weight in football competitiveness that sees displays like these would want to be a part of it. If they don’t, then I don’t want them on the Buckeye roster.

Frankly, Urban even makes field goals exciting. In the second quarter, Drew Basil nailed a 41 yard field goal to put the Scarlet team up 10-0. But the special teams fun (did I really just type that?) wasn’t done. Meyer kept making Basil convert kicks from further and further away until he was kicking from midfield into the wind.

In the meantime, Urban was emphatically pumping the crowd up for what was ultimately a practice field goal in April. And it worked. Even though the field goal of almost 60 yards into the wind fell just short, the crowd was into it. Too bad that was never done when Mike Nugent was here, otherwise the drill would have lasted two hours until he was kicking from his own 20.

As for the actual game, the team with Braxton Miller (Scarlet) beat the team without Braxton Miller (Gray) 20-14. While I was disappointed Jordan Hall didn’t play after raving about him in my running backs preview, it was ultimately a success because there were no serious injuries.

Can’t wait until the fall – the Urban Renewal is just getting started.

Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of spring game position analysis by The Buckeye Blogger’s Network (BBN). The plan was for Scott and I to collaborate on this post with Scott taking running backs and I’d cover the QBs. However, as you can see below, Scott’s RB analysis deserves it’s own post. I’ll post my QB analysis in a separate post to come.

Running back and Ohio State pretty much go hand in hand. Maybe you’ve heard of a few of these names – Hopalong Cassidy, Vic Janowicz, Eddie George, Robert Smith, Beanie Wells, and some guy named Archie Griffin. In fact, six of the school’s seven Heisman trophies were given to players who were featured as running backs.

But none of those running backs were featured in a spread style offense. With new captain Urban Meyer steering the SS Buckeye, my guess would be the next Ohio State Heisman winner won’t be a between the tackle bruiser.

That doesn’t mean the running back spot will disappear. Heck, look at Oregon – without the Ducks running backs, all their offense would be is fancy laundry and second hand marijuana smoke (as ESPN so eloquently pointed out in its latest magazine issue).

So don’t lose faith in the running back in the spread offense. Contrary to popular belief, the position still exists. So let’s get to it.

What will be most different this year than last?

For one, all of the running backs on this year’s roster presumably paid for their tattoos. Off-field issues aside, the loss of Daniel “Boom” Herron is certainly significant. It was clear by the second half of last season that he was the closest thing the Buckeyes had to a consistent offensive threat, and his leadership was crucial in contests against Illinois and especially Wisconsin. Without Herron’s play, we never would have gotten the chance to experience the one high of last year – Braxton Miller’s game winning heave against Bucky Badger.

And perhaps most damaging of all, we won’t have the chance to yell “Booooooom” after a big play. I’ll actually miss that.

Don’t forget, it will also be different not hearing about Jaamal Berry’s latest run in with the campus police every week. Too bad he was about as successful avoiding defenders as he was avoiding trouble. What a shame.

What are you excited to see at each position? What are you concerned about?

It will no doubt be exciting watching Urban and offensive coordinator Tom Herman taking the Buckeyes into the 21st century offensively, specifically with Jordan Hall. I can’t wait to see number seven sneak out on bubble screens, passes out of the backfield, and spending some time in the slot as receiver.

The key to the spread offense is getting the speed in the open field and not having the 5-foot-9 sub 200 pound shifty back lower his head and run right into the back of his offensive line like a Madden ’98 run (thanks for the memories Jim Bollman). After all, Hall led the Buckeyes in all-purpose yards last year, even though he battled through some nagging injuries and a two game suspension. There’s no reason he can’t astronomically improve under the new regime.

Of course, my excitement comes with a step-by-step chronological manual. After Urban unleashes a no-huddle spread offense attack that includes Hall doing his best Percy Harvin imitation (I bet you haven’t heard any clamoring about who is going to play the Harvin role for the Buckeyes this offseason) for the first quarter to half, the defense will be sufficiently winded. Especially if that defense is made up of 300 pound un-athletic lumberjacks, which ESPN tells me all Big Ten defenses are. Then (El Guapo) Carlos Hyde will play the role of bull in a china shop and ideally kill the will of the opponents and the clock.

These anticipations do not come without caution. I am certainly concerned that there will be growing pains out of the offense as a whole, including the running backs. It’s no secret the offense will be a bit more complex this year, and I think it is going to be a culture shock, especially early on, and I expect some blown assignments, turnovers, and all that fun stuff that makes us throw our remotes across the room.

However, gradually the offense should pick up on the new schemes, pace, and modern day-ness of Herman and Meyer’s system, which will set up for a particularly exciting 2013 season (you know, the one where there will actually be a postseason awaiting).

Who will stand out? Who’s a “rookie” you’re keeping your eyes on?

There is really only one answer when it comes to the running back position for the rookie question: Bri’onte Dunn. There’s a reason Urban was so emphatic about the need to keep him away from the prying (and chicken grease stained) hands of Brady Hoke during the stretch run of recruiting season. The on-again off-again verbal commit eased the minds of Buckeye fans when he officially committed to the Scarlet and Gray shortly after the hiring of Meyer.

He fits a similar mold as Hyde, so expect some early tag team efforts in the aforementioned bull in the china shop moments. He graduated high school early and has reportedly stood out in spring practice, which will only quicken his development. If there is a next Eddie George or Beanie Wells hidden somewhere on this roster, Dunn is probably the one. But let’s do our best to not latch onto those expectations, at least not right away.

Despite all that prognostication about the running back position, it still wouldn’t shock me if Braxton Miller led the team in rushing yards this season. Not that this is a bad thing, but make sure you stay healthy young man.

I’ve been sitting fairly quiet on this but considering the drubbing that Ohio State took over malicious NCAA violating tattoo abuse but at some point you just have to speak up. The Bobby Petrino story just keeps getting better and better. Long-time readers of this blog will remember my defense of Petrino as an outstanding man of character. All you need to do is ask Louisville fans and they will be quick to tell you how they feel about Petrino. And if the SEC wasn’t providing enough fodder, there are the Auburn players currently on trial for armed robbery.

But for now, let’s just stick to a solid round of “I Told You So” and score a laugh or two at the former Arkansas, Atlanta Falcons, 10 year contract breaking Louisville, wannabe Auburn interviewing coach.

We start out with the latest Deadspin report that along with an affair with his favorite motorcycle riding employee, Hugh…I mean Bobby Petrino also exchanged 200 or so text messages with former “Motorcycle Mania” bikini model and former GOP Young Republican starlet Alison Melder. (Wait, where did her picture go?!)

So far, Deadspin commenter RMJ=H leads the competition with "I propose we dub these photos 'The Little Rock Seven.'"

But the fun doesn’t stop there folks. Who can pass on the true cause of the motorcycle accident faithfully rendered in Taiwanese.(NSFW) (HT to Lost Lettermen)

Or maybe the newest scooter/motorcycle accessory to hit the streets of Fayetville (Via Twitter <s>@</s>cbahn):

Then of course are the just downright fears that there are more revealing texts to come. This from Arkansas Sports Reporter Robbie Neiswang’s twitter feed (Neiswang is going through the Petrino phone records).

I’m sorry folks, even thinking about it makes me shudder.

Finally, although I’m never one to spread rumors I’ll make an exception in this case. As the list of Petrno rumors grows longer and longer, my favorite has been the speculation as to how Petrino got so banged up in the motorcycle crash but his passenger, Jessica Dorrell, walked away unscathed. One theory is that Dorrell’s fiance forced Petrino off the road and proceeded to beat the crap out of him (see rumor No. 17 here).

So I leave it to you fans. Give us your best Bobby Petrino joke, thoughts or latest rumor on this upstanding leader of young men.

If you are anything like me, basketball is still a bit of a sore subject for the time being and the new football era can’t come fast enough. After all, it was only about a week ago that the Buckeyes had a championship game berth in their grasp and let it slip away.

But alas, there is always next year (as a Cubs fan, I have become way too familiar with this phrase). Now that Jared Sullinger and (hopefully) William Buford are officially taking their talents to the NBA, and Deshaun Thomas is remaining a Buckeye, next year’s roster is beginning to take shape. It may not look like a Final Four team at this point, but I think it would be premature to write off the potential of next year’s roster before the summer even begins.

The first place you have to look if you want to feel some optimism is the point guard position. It may be hard to believe, but this past year was Aaron Craft’s first collegiate season as a starter. There is no better on-the-floor leader or on-ball defender in all of college basketball, and that will not change next year. What I think will improve is his contributions in the scoring department. We saw a little bit of this in the tournament, and I expect Craft to recognize the need for more of his offense. After all, in case you didn’t see the (awesome) rubix cube clip four-hundred times this year, he is pretty smart.

The other returning starters will be Thomas and Lenzelle Smith Jr. If everything goes according to plan, Thomas will almost certainly be the team’s primary scorer, and he should be. As frustrating as his play was in the loss to Kansas, Thomas showed his potential in the rest of the tournament. He has size, can shoot the three, and is a monster on the offensive glass. If Ohio State is going to reach its ceiling next year, Thomas must be one of the best players in the entire Big Ten.

Smith was a pleasant surprise in the tournament. He showed some flashes during the regular season but also had the tendency to disappear for stretches of games. If he can bring his timely three point shooting and defensive intensity that we saw in the Elite Eight Syracuse victory and Sweet Sixteen Cincinnati victory, I think Smith can certainly replace the loss of Buford’s inconsistent production from this past season.

Here’s where the prognostication gets fun. We know Thomas, Smith, and Craft will likely be starters barring something unexpected, but the other two spots are up for grabs. What I think (read, hope) will happen is Amir Williams grabs the center position by the reins from the beginning and LaQuinton Ross slides into the small forward spot.

Williams has the potential to be an all-conference type of player if he reaches his ceiling. He is the only legitimate shot blocker on Ohio State’s roster and has the ability to put the ball in the basket. While nobody will mistake him for Greg Oden or Jared Sullinger, he has the chance to become a more offensively talented version of Dallas Lauderdale, and there is nothing wrong with that. Confidence might have been an issue at times this season, so it will be important for Thad Matta to give him substantial playing time against the usual early season cupcakes.

Ross is the biggest wildcard for the Bucks next year. He was highly recruited coming out of high school but missed the first month of the past season with academic issues and never found his way into Matta’s rotation after that. He supposedly has a deadly three-point shot and can slash with solid ball handling skills for his size. I’m not saying he is ever going to win the Naismith Trophy, but the closest comparison from recent Buckeye teams I can think of is Evan Turner. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Not that it really matters with Matta as the head man, but that leaves Evan Ravenel, Shannon Scott, and Sam Thompson as the primary bench guys, assuming there isn’t a late recruiting addition in the fold. You could do worse for a bench. Thompson provides great defensive energy and can jump out of the building. Ravenel knows his role – defense, rebounding, and every once in a while some offense. Scott certainly did not reach his five-star potential this year, but as long as the glass is half-full, let’s just say he is going to put it together next year.

All in all, assuming good health, I think the Bucks will finish in the top two or three in the Big Ten. Indiana will be loaded (if everyone comes back), Michigan State is still Michigan State, and Michigan has the chance to be really good if Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway put off the NBA and join a top-notch recruiting class. It should be a good season, even if there may not be a return trip to the final four.

Rest assured that next year’s sports season will not begin and end with Urban Meyer. But it better include a football win on November 24.

The following is an official announcement from Buckeye Bloggers Network Headquarters. After extensive discussion, analysis and under the table payoffs, we have our winners in the Bracket Challenge contest. From HQ:

We’ve hesitated to announce the winner of the Buckeye Bloggers Network Bracket Challenge this year, mostly because we were waiting to see if our insurance provider would cover any… uh… peripheral damage that might result from someone winning. For some reason, folks seem to be “overly enthusiastic” these days.

That being said, we’ve got to give huge accolades to Austin for his victory over Greg by one point… our winner had three of the final four accurate, and even predicted the palindromic UK KU matchup and Wildkat victory. Greg had a similar set of selections, but fell just short based on some earlier selections- understandable doubts of Cincinnati’s prowess, perhaps.

Greg isn’t out in the cold, however- Given the benevolence of our partners, we were able to provide prizes for the top ten finishers… they should be anxiously standing by their mailboxes as we speak.

If it’s not already obvious, we couldn’t have done this without the help of our great sponsors, so PLEASE show them some love. We were lucky to partner this time with:

The Buckeye Room- Great gear for the greatest fans in the nation

CVS Flags- You want everyone to see when you fly your colors, this is the place to go

Stay tuned to the BBN for more Buckeye coverage and ways to get involved- we’ve got some ides brewing for the Spring Game that you’re going to want to be a part of.

After scoring 1,282 points (avg. 17.3 points per game), pulling in 717 rebounds (9.7 per game), and starting 73 out of 74 games played, Jared Sullinger has ended the speculation and announced that he is leaving for the NBA. During the last two years, Sullinger has helped the Ohio State Buckeyes win more games in a two year stretch than any other team in the country.

Although I’d like to think that another year would do him good, this is not college football, this is the NBA. Star players come out much younger and do well.

As much as I’d like to seem him come back for another year, when faced with the opportunity to make millions, it would be wrong for him not to do so. College classes can be taken during the off season. Sullinger is a Columbus native. His roots are deep and he will always call Columbus home. It is highly likely that you may see him around campus in the fall.

Thank you for a great run Jared and here’s to a successful career in the NBA.

I have never seen a better 40 minute metaphor for a team’s entire season than Ohio State’s effort against Kansas on Saturday. In one evening we witnessed the tantalizing potential this team has flirted with all year, as well as the mind numbingly frustrating style of play that led to Thad Matta kicking his own team out of practice in February.

In what was a rematch from a game in December (in case you were living under a rock the past week and didn’t hear 7,789 times – the Bucks didn’t have Jared Sullinger last time), the Scarlet and Gray came out with their hair on fire. The Buckeyes leapt out to a double digit lead and seemed to be in control of the game, tempo, and eventual outcome.

We were all fooled. The deflating end to the first half, which cut the deficit to single digits for the first time in awhile, was an ominous sign of things to come.

Everything that could have gone wrong in the second half seemingly did. There was foul trouble (Deshaun Thomas), more turnovers than assists, and the return of black hole Sullinger who likes to wait for the double team and throw up shot attempts into brick walls of defense (resulting in a 5-19 performance) and ultimately blame the officiating.

Who would have thought that William Buford, the lone senior who was at times the target of so much dissent among parts of Buckeye Nation, was the one factor that went the Buckeyes’ way in the second half? Honestly, he should have been the one shooting the ball down the stretch. Buford led the team in scoring, despite taking fewer shots than Sully, Thomas, and even Aaron Craft. Are you kidding me?

And after putting on his own personal exhibition in the tournament’s first four games, Deshaun Thomas regressed back to his freshman year ways Saturday, forcing 14 shots (and only making three, including a 1-7 effort from downtown), not playing in the flow of the game, and frankly, displaying a selfish brand of basketball.

Look, Thad Matta has done a lot of great things for the Ohio State program, and his accomplishments are often overlooked. But what do the Bucks even do in the locker room at halftime? For the second time in the last three NCAA Tournament games, the Buckeyes had a solid lead at the break and then seemed to go through the motions out of the tunnel, allowing the opposition back into the game. This time, Matta’s bunch wasn’t playing against an inferior Cincinnati team, and it came back to bite them.

As long as we are on the topic of Matta, where was Sam Thompson in the second half? I’m not asking for him to play ten minutes down the stretch, but he provided crucial energy and defense in the first half, rebounded, and even swatted three blocks. He couldn’t have at least seen the court for a couple of minutes in the second half to try to help stop the bleeding?

Despite my (and I’m assuming your) frustrations, this was ultimately a great year for Ohio State basketball. I think if someone would have told any of us that the Buckeyes would be playing in the Final Four back in February, we would have been overjoyed (and perhaps more than a bit skeptical). It was Ohio State’s 11th trip to the Final Four (ignore the NCAAs best efforts to zap the 1999 season from your mind, Men in Black style), and the second under Matta.

This was a special team, and the way it bounced back from its late season struggles and found a way to make it to college basketball’s finest stage is certainly commendable. As much as it hurts now, this squad will be remembered fondly for years to come among Buckeye basketball fans.

I wish I could say the near future looks bright. But, I’m not really sure that I can at this point. Buford (yes, he was incredibly inconsistent, but you can’t deny what he has meant for the program), almost surely Sullinger, and probably Thomas (even though it would be a monumental error in judgment on his part in my opinion) are leaving. What’s more, this year’s highly touted freshmen class didn’t get much of a chance to develop (heaven forbid they got more playing time against the cupcakes in November and December).

But rest assured, while it may take some time, the Buckeyes will be back. For now, let’s just turn our attention to Urban Meyer, Braxton Miller, and the Silver Bullets. The spring game’s only a couple weeks away.

And at least we didn’t lose in the first round to Ohio.
