Chuck Norris, Meet Urban Meyer

by Annapolisbuckeye on December 16, 2011

Urban Meyer can steal recruits with just his stare.

Although I’ve openly confessed my feelings about Urban Meyer, what a week he’s had. Not even three weeks in as head coach at Ohio State and his presence is being felt not just in the Big Ten but throughout all of college football. After the Michigan loss, I said that Michigan gets one chance but at the rate Meyere is working, that may be a stretch.

As of this week, Michigan State commit Tommy Schutt and Penn State commit Se’Von Pittman, both defensive standouts,  have announced that they will be coming to Ohio State. Running back Brionte Dunn, who had dropped his commit to Ohio State to look at Michigan, has now reconfirmed his commit to Ohio State. Meyer still has a number of top recruites both committed and non commits in bulls eye including No. 1 ranked quarterback Jameis Winston. Although Winston has verbally committed to Florida State, he is making an official visit to tOSU and has expressed his interest in playing for Meyer.

Even before Meyer was officially announced, Miami commit Ricquan Southwind and Adolphus Washington (looking at Alabama, Michigan, others) announced their commit to OSU saying they were hoping for the chance to play for Meyer.

Meanwhile, Michigan coach Brady Hoake has had a great time running through the state of Ohio this fall talking NCAA sanctions and grabbing the talent that Michigan can’t seem to produce. In doing so he managed to obtain nine verbals from Ohio players and at the moment, one of the top five ranked recruiting classes in the country. As we can see, those verbal commits don’t amount to too much in the face of an Urban Meyer assault. If he wants to keep his Ohio boys, he’s going to have to give them all the love and care he can during the next month and a half.

Meyer hasn’t been sleeping this week on the coaching front either. Along with announcing the Coach Fickell will call defense, he has hired North Carolina coach Everit Withers as a “co” defensive coordinator or something of the sort. And in an a painfully obvious move, Meyer is bringing in Tom Herman who has seen success at both Rice and Iowa State to replace Nick Siciliano as quarterback coach. Herman should be a good fit for the Urban Meyer style offense.

It is also clear that the dark days of Jim Bohlman offense are over as Bollman and Dick Tressel will be following Siciliano out the door. No word yet on Vrable but I for one hope they keep him on board. Meyer needs both Fickell and Vrabel to keep him honest from a Buckeye street cred perspective.

Keep Vrabel. Otherwise he will just return to the boring NFL.

You can put lipstick on a pig ……. but, it is still a pig.

I am glad I don’t have to watch Meyer walking my sideline.

To put “lipstick on a pig” is a rhetorical expression, used to convey the message that making superficial or cosmetic changes is a futile attempt to disguise the true nature of a product.[1] While the rhetorical concept appears to have a long-standing provenance, the actual phrase appears to be of 20th-century coinage, and has risen to prominence due to its use in US politics, most recently during the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. – Wikipedia

Gonzo – Please don’t take any comment about a “Pig” personally. I wasn’t even thinking about you.

Case in point ……. I don’t care about the “great things” urban is doing on the recruiting trail right now. He is still urban meyer ….. the egotistical crybaby that he is. Not too many coaches put a bad taste in my mouth. But urban does.

I just hope that Oregon would never hire Pete Carroll.

Tony, do you honestly have to take things so seriously? I was just trying to make humor. My bad.

The Ghog seems to have alot of insight to what will happen a OSU for a Hog, I quess he is communicateting like one and snorting like one. I swure wish the Hogs were playing the
Ducks this year, it would be cool seeing the ducks run up 40+ points on them. Tony, I’m going to have a hard time with it myself, I don’t think I cane get thae picture of him wearing orange and blue out of my mind. Yuk, Yuk.

That would be nice carl. Oregon’s defense is no better than the Hog’s D and since the Hog offense is just as good as USC’s,…well, you know. Great matchup.

Gonzo …… as info …… the Trojans finished the year very strong. Your offense IS NOT EVEN CLOSE to where they are. Matt Barkley is arguably the best college QB in the nation and if he doesn’t go to the NFL then the Trojans will be ranked in the preseason top 5 next year. I don’t think a Oregon/Arkansas game would be a “great matchup” at all …… as Carl said …. the Ducks would run up 40 on you. I think Wisconsin will be a “great matchup”. The Badgers have one of the best defenses in the nation and their offensive line is huge. This game will be a contrast of styles and both teams really need a BCS Bowl win.

Tony, when I say “great matchup”, I’m referring to the fact both teams have very good, high scoring offenses, although they definately have a contrast in style, much like Stanford vs. Oklahoma State. (pro-style vs. spread)
The difference in Oregon and Arkansas doesn’t vary that much when you consider both teams rely on bigtime playmakers that have lots of speed.

Oregon’s win over a terrible UCLA squad in that so called “championship game” was very unimpressive.
You could say the same thing about Arkansas’s loss to LSU, but then again, you know all about those guys don’t you? At least you got a nuetral field…we didn’t.
It’s also a good thing your team didn’t have to prepare for the game the previous week while grieving the death of a team mate.
Oregon had all summer, caught LSU when they should’ve been at their weakest with all the bar sceen/fighting controvercy stuff going on and still couldn’t beat them.
Know what else? The Pac 12 really sucks this season. The only reason people think USC’s defense is good is because they only play two good offenses all season. They’re not as good as you want to believe they are, but the media sure does love ‘em, which gives you an excuse to brag about how good Oregon is supposed to be.

Yeah, yeah, I know, the SEC is down this year, just like they have been for the past 10 years.

Oh and carl, it’s communicating, not communicateting. (lols)

Huh?

If you are jus’ spouting to read yer own drivel, well …ok.

If you mean to tell us you CAN read minds, and you KNOW how a Buckeye team will be guided by the Urban Meyer coaching staff, then please put yer coin down with the site administrator, and lets see what comes ….

Wait a second. I thought Meyer had hired Mike Stoops.

Not so fast everyone. Dispatch via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that Fickell is a candidate for the Pitt job.

I hope he sticks around. As I said, Meyer needs him to keep him honest.

Jim,
If I am Fickell …… I am taking the first train out of town. I don’t think he will get another shot at the head coaching position of tOSU after going 3-5 in conference play. If he doesn’t get a head coaching job soon his name will float off into obscurity. The longer he waits to move to the next level ……. the more people will forget about the issues that surrounded this season. All they will look at is his win/loss record.

Mikie December 19, 2011 at 3:30 pm

Unfortunately I fear the duck is correct…that practically hurt!

Fickell ought to take a head coach job if it is out there for him…at the right program / level.

UNLESS – he is happy in a dimmer spotlight and content with his hoe, / situation.

I can see someone making the case either way. I hope he stays, because as someone pointed out it will keep Urban honest and there will be a VERY strong Buckeye foundation on staff. Vrabl would be smart as well…

I am optimistic that Urban will settle in and not be so Urban-like .

I think Jim has the litmus test – if he stays off the interview list and off TV for the bowl season, keeps his head down and lets the current staff do their job for the gator bowl – THEN we have a good shot at a Urban not being the larger that tOSU…

Won’t knew until Jan 2 though…which BTW did I mention how pissed I am about having to wait until the 2nd for College ball….RIDICULOUS!

Mikie out!
