While other conferences base their division names on geographical references (East/West, North/South, Atlantic/Coastal), the Big Ten has announced that they will buck the trend naming the two new conference divisions “Legends” and “Leaders.” Although it would seem natural to look for some sort of meaning in the teams represented in each division, don’t count on it.

Lock a team of marketing execs in a room for three months and this is what you get folks.

The new “Legends” division will consist of: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern

Teams in the “Leaders” division will be: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin.

Does this mean that Ohio State and Wisconsin are the new “leaders” of the Big Ten while Nebraska, the newest team to the bunch is a Big Ten “Legend?” Like I said, don’t look for meaning. You’ll only drive yourself crazy.

Fortunately, we’ve got p.r. people. In an attempt to make sense of it all, I point you to the press release announcing the divisions. In the release, Big Ten commissioner James Delany explains the names:

“‘Legends’ is a nod to our history and to the people associated with our schools who are widely recognized as legends – student-athletes, coaches, alumni and faculty. ‘Leaders’ looks to the future as we remain committed to fostering leaders, the student-athletes who are encouraged to lead in their own way for the rest of their lives, in their families, in their communities and in their chosen professions,” said Delany. “We’re proud of our many legends and even prouder of our member institutions that develop future leaders every day.”

Like I said, good thing we have p.r. people to write this stuff. (“We’re proud of our many…” Please.)

O.K., so I buy into the “Legends” and “Leaders” thing. That still doesn’t explain the No. 1 in the new logo. Am I missing the two? Is this a tribute to the legend of the 1 in the latest Big Ten logo? Again, I refer to the press release:

“The new Big Ten logo was developed to symbolize the conference’s future, as well as its rich heritage, strong tradition of competition, academic leadership, and passionate alumni,” said Gericke. “Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral “10″ in the word “BIG,” which allows fans to see “BIG” and “10″ in a single word. Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo’s use of negative space and is built on the conference’s iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions.”

Oh…I get it…the G sort of looks like a 0.

Keeping consistent with the legends theme, the Big 10 also anno0unced 18 new trophies named after Big 10 Legends. For the most part, these are pretty cool as the updates include a number of recent legends as well as those from the past.

For example, the Big Ten champions will win the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy (tell me that doesn’t give Penn State a reason to play next year) and the player named MVP will win the Grange-Griffin Championship Game MVP.

Other Ohio State honorees include Woody Hayes with the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year, Eddie George with the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year, Orlando Pace with the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year (love seeing the Pancake get his due), and Jack Tatum with the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year.

You can see a list of the trophies and short bios of the honorees here.

Pick the score and win one of these prizes. Details at the end of the post.

Let me just start out by saying thank goodness JoPa hit the 400 mark. The last thing I wanted to do was spend a week discussing the implications of Jo Paterno playing for his 400th win at Ohio Stadium. Fortunately, we got that out of the way last week. Of course, Uncle Joe couldn’t let it go at 400. He had to leave the field with a “Now let’s go beat Ohio State” which I’m sure will result in a new t-shirt slogan (on white t-shirts of course) and some kid paying for another semester’s tuition.

Vegas Likes the Bucks
Although the BCS doesn’t like Ohio State, someone must. The Buckeyes opened this week as 18 point favorites. Sort of surprising considering the way Penn State has been coming on the past few weeks. Remember though that the big comeback last week was against Northwestern. Unlike Northwestern, Ohio State has a defense. Give the Buckeyes get a 21 point lead and they’ll hold it to cover the spread.

As they do every year, Penn State is showing a little confidence coming into this game. The addition of Matt McGloin at quarterback has given Penn State something of a spark. In two games he’s thrown 475 yards, five touchdowns and hasn’t tossed an interception yet. Of course, beating up on Minnesota and Northwestern will only take you so far. He has yet to meet a defense like Ohio State — especially a well rested Ohio State defense. Or even worse, a well rested Buckeye defense lead by Ross Homan who should be back at full strength by Saturday.

Personally, I think the Buckeyes are going to dissect Penn State Saturday. Ohio State is playing with one of the most balanced teams we’ve had in years. Dane Sanzenbacher is on pace to catch more touchdowns this season than Chris Carter, Joey Galloway, and Santonio Holmes did in their best seasons. Boom Herron had become the go-to man when yards are needed on the ground and I have faith that the offensive line will continue to gel. Pryor even said he was going to spend the off week learning not to pass the ball to his receiver’s shoelaces. Penn State meanwhile is riding on confidence formed at the bottom of the Big Ten.

With the human polls placing the Buckeyes at No. 7, there’s still a chance for the BCS to catch up. Ohio State is going to receive a lot of attention in these last three games. A big win Saturday will not only provide a nice confidence boost before heading to Iowa, it won’t hurt any in the eyes of the voters.

Mr. 1 meet Mr. 2
Although the difference in total wins will be big, the top two winning coaches in college football will face each other Saturday in Ohio Stadium.

Predict and Win
We’ve got prizes again this week. Predict the score of the Ohio State vs. Penn State game and you could win one of the lovely prizes pictured above courtesy of our friends at Gametimegeeks.com. If nobody get’s it exactly, I’ll give it to who ever picks the winner and is closest to the total score. Leave your guess in the comment below.

Update: The Winner…
I can’t tell you how much it pains me to do this but yes, tEggman won it again this week. He was only one point from getting the score exactly.

Colorado announced yesterday that they will be joining the Pac 10 effectively bringing down the house of cards that has become the Big 12. With the announcement comes this morning’s story on TMZ that Oklahoma State will also head west to the Pac 12.

And as we all await Nebraska’s announcement this afternoon that they will join the Big 10, expect the rest of the Big 12 South to fall into place following their predecessors down the mother highway to the land of milk and honey.

Don’t worry Missouri…it will all be over soon.

I was in Columbus earlier this week and happened to catch our friend Rob Harley on CD 101. Rob may have summed it up best when he said that everything there is to be said about the Oregon/Ohio State matchup was covered the the week after the game was announced. With 300+ comments on this blog, he’s probably right. Even so, Rob manage to find some good talking points to fill the spot and I’ve got enough left to fill one last post.

So with that:

Laurinatis and Hartline Weigh In
I got an email this morning from Kirk Reynolds who’s latest projects include Playmaker Mobile. Playmaker Mobile interviewed former Buckeyes James Laurinitis and Brian Hartline about the Rose Bowl. Here’s what they had to say:

Laurinitis

Masoli concerns me. He is a true dual threat. He can run, he’s got speed, good shakes and he can throw. Plus he can run you over. He really is perfect for that system. They have two good running backs in Blount and LeMichael James, but if you focus too much on stopping them you lose site of Masoli.

Larry Grant went to San Francisco City College and has been telling me about Masoli, because they played together. If he wins that game against Stanford he deserved to get his name in the Heisman talk. He’s that good. He’s not a prototype so he flies under the radar a little, but next year, he’ll have an opportunity to be one of the guys being talked about.

The key to this game is making Oregon one dimensional, take away that zone read. You have to stop their running game and turn them into a passing team. If you don’t stop the run against Oregon you have no chance of slowing that offense down.

Joe Bauserman is crucial. He’s got to give the defense good looks. He’s got good speed and good shakes so he can emulate Masoli, but you still have to stop the real thing. It won’t be easy, but that’s the key to the game.

The Rose Bowl is a dream come true. The two goals you set out to accomplish are to win the Big 10 and play for the National Championship. If you don’t make the BCS game then you better win the Rose Bowl. National Championships are almost how you’re judged now at Ohio State. We’ve had so many Big 10 championships that the fans expect that. As a team, you want that black and white picture hanging on the wall in the Woody Hayes Center and the only way to do that is win the national championship. If you don’t get that you better win the Rose Bowl or else you’re really just another team at Ohio State. Any time you lose a bowl game it just leaves a sour taste in your mouth and takes something away from the season. So there is a lot riding on this game.

Interesting point about Bauserman. Made me take a second look. You forget that even the guys who don’t play on game day are a crucial part of the team.

Hartline:

Terrell Pryor has had some ups and downs. From an outsider’s point of view he has been at his best when the passing game comes to him. It seems like they were doing some things, kind of forcing the passing game early on and that took him out of the comfort zone. When he starts making plays with his feet, getting outside of the pocket he seems to get a little more comfortable. He’ll be the key to the game. Getting him comfortable, letting his legs get moving, getting him outside the pocket, those things will get the passing game going.

Oregon’s defense runs well so I don’t see Ohio State getting those big momentum changing plays in the running game. They’ll make some plays, but I think the big plays, the game changing plays are going to have to come through the air so I think it will come down to how well Terrell plays. He’s got receivers. Posey and Sanzenbacher have been making plays all season and they’ll have to do it again when the plays present themselves against Oregon.

We have a great defense at Ohio State and I think the defense will keep the game even keel so it will really be decided by which quarterback and which offense executes the best. Masoli runs it very well and both guys have good arms. I don’t want to put too much on one kid, but if Terrell is playing well, making plays with his feet and limits mistakes I think Ohio State will be very tough to beat. If he plays well the rest of the team will finish it.

Ohio State will win. I think it’s going to be a tough game, but getting to the Rose Bowl after three Fiesta Bowls in four years will be very motivating. I’m sure it will be motivating for Oregon too, but I just feel it’s Ohio State’s time. Getting to California will be an eye opening experience for Ohio State. It’s a big year for the Big 10. We have to have a strong showing and make a stand.

Pryor as the X factor…go figure.

Oregon and the Quick Snap
One of the many Oregon fans who have visited this blog in the past month called me out because I hadn’t addressed Oregon’s hurry up offense (Tony in Beavertown?). In the past couple of days both Ivan Maisel at ESPN.com and Ken Gordon at The Columbus Dispatch have also brought up the quick snap.

Maisel points out that even though the Oregon offense scores an average 37 points per game, they only hold the ball a mere 26:58 per game. Gordon adds that 38 percent of Oregon’s scoring drives this season took less than two minutes off the clock.

Gordon goes on to point out that even though Oregon plays fast, they only average about five more plays per game then Ohio State’s opponents so far.

Defensive endurance may be a factor on both sides of the ball. In Oregon’s case, they will need to deal with the physical aspect of the Buckeye offense. For the Buckeyes, their ability to recover quick and contain the option will be crucial. Masel reports that Oregon loves the challenge of grinding it out. According to Gordon, the Buckeyes have focused on endurance training since bowl selection. Doug Worthington stated that there has been a significant improvement in the huff and puff factor during the past month.

“They’re Big, Really Big”
The Oregon offensive line noticed something those of us in Buckeye Nation have been saying for some time — these Buckeyes are huge. Oregon offensive linemen Carson York told the Oregon Daily Emerald,

“Our team, there are some big guys, but most of the guys are pretty normal-looking dudes. At least we think so, being around each other, but when we go out in public we’re giants…I saw all those Ohio State guys at Disneyland (on December 26, for the first Rose Bowl press conference), and there is not a small guy on that team. Every guy just seems big. I don’t know if they have 70 lineman or what. I don’t know if they left the DBs or wide receivers at home, but I didn’t see them.”

It’s important to note that York is 6-foot-5 and weighs 285 pounds.

Others agreed with York who added,

“It’s not really something that we’ve dealt with all year, just within the Pac-10…I think Purdue is probably the closest in size that we’ve dealt with, and Ohio State’s a step up.”

Defending Against the Oregon Spread – One More Time
In an earlier post, I said that the Ohio State defensive front is known for it’s aggressive play and that they needed to hit Masoli hard and hit him early. I’m going to retract some of that.

It’s not that the Buckeye defense is aggressive, it’s that they play their positions and do their jobs well which results in sacks, turnovers and effective play. It’s their disciplined play that stands out.

And this is what it will take against this Oregon offense — discipline. Each player needs to do their job and make their tackles. ESPN.com’s Adam Rittenberg summed it up well when he said, “As long as Buckeyes defenders account for every possible ball carrier, they can limit damage.”

Again, seems simple enough. Tackle the guy with the ball and tackle the guy who you think has the ball. Get enough defensemen making enough tackles and one of them has to be right.

Doug Worthington was quoted in the same article saying, “If you have the dive, if you have the running back, have the dive, have the running back…Sometimes he’s going to get [the ball], sometimes he’s not. But as soon as your guy doesn’t have the ball, you have to go out there and help the other man out.”

Of course a good hard shot early in the game won’t hurt anything either.

In what is becoming something of a regular cycle, the Big Ten has put out word that they are interested in adding another team to the conference. This will be the fifth time the Big Ten has considered expansion since Penn State joined the division in 1990. Ohio State president Gorden Gee is one of the first to come out in favor of adding a 12th team to the conference.

When we look at the number shared champions, the need for a Big Ten Championship has become apparent. In recent years, the Big Ten has slept through the month of December while the SEC and others are building momentum heading into the bowls. However, the move to play into December next year may be enough to solve this problem.

The first question that comes to mind when adding teams is who and we all tend to look to Notre Dame. Don’t count on it folks. There is absolutely no incentive for Notre Dame to play in the Big Ten. They have their own personal television contract which brings in millions and their own special place in the BCS. They turned down the offer in 2009 and it’s probably safe to say that they will turn it down again. And while I’d enjoy a good Notre Dame beatdown, do we really want them in the division.

A Penn State fan on Twitter did point out the potential of ending the regular season with Penn State/Notre Dame and Ohio State/Michigan games to decide the conference championship.

Other teams I’ve seen tossed around include West Virginia, Missouri, Rutgers and Virginia Tech. Missouri and WVU seem like good matches due to their Midwestern local. WVU has the rivalry game with Pitt that will need to be dealt with while Missouri has been building it’s own rivalries. They’ve got their thing with Illinois that could possible grow into something better.

I’m not keen on Virigina Tech and I really don’t have a good reason not to be. They just seem too far south to me. Rutgers? We’ll they’ve got football history and tradition but again..Rutgers?

From a financial perspective, Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel gives an interesting breakdown. According to Mandel, a 12th team would need to add around $22 million in revenue to make the deal worthwhile. If his numbers are correct, there’s only one school who can realistically bring in that type of cash and as I mentioned earlier, they’ve turned us down before and there’s absolutely no incentive for them to join.

Thoughts?
Since I’m tending to ramble at this point and running out of time, let me know what you think of a 12th team. Is it a good idea? Does moving games to Dec. solve our Dec. layoff problem? Who?

And what about Ohio State/Michigan. This is probably my biggest concern. Call me nostalgic but losing those years when OSU/UM decide the Rose Bowl…too much to pay.

Gorden Gee Shares His Thoughts
The Ozone.net put up a great video on YouTube. In it, Gee talks about everything from a 12th game to a 12th team.

Bowl Pickem
Our friends over at 11 Warriors are organizing a Bowl Pickem contest. I’m in although I picking in a hurry before leaving town today. Hopefully I’ll get through the opening weekend in one piece. Get in today or you may miss out on the St. Petersburg Bowl (yep…that’s where I’m headed).

Coming soon
More Oregon/OSU stuff to come. Been a busy week but think “Three Keys to Winning.” Don’t post ‘em yet…just something to think about.

The 11th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge starts this week and let’s be honest, it hasn’t been much of a challenge for the ACC to win it. The Big Ten has never won the annual match up and this year might be their best chance. With six teams in the top 25 in both the Coach’s and AP poll the Big Ten looks poised to finally take the challenge.

Whether it is fair or not, the nation looks at the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1) as the measuring stick for the Big Ten. Most of this stems from the football team, which has struggled in nationally televised games, including the dreaded 2006-2007 season where Florida dominated the Buckeyes in two title games (Football and Men’s Basketball).

This year the veteran Buckeyes get the much-improved Florida State Seminoles (6-1), whose only loss came to the aforementioned Florida Gators. The Seminoles are lead by 7-1 sophomore center Solomon Alabi and sophomore forward Chris Singleton.

The Buckeyes counter with all world junior guard/forward Evan Turner. Turner is averaging a double double for the season and has garnered two triple doubles and three Big Ten player of the week awards.

OSU is coming off a blow out victory against St. Francis (PA) where they dominated every facet of the game. The large margin of victory allowed Thad Matta to get his entire bench involved in the game and rest his starters with none of the starters playing more than 28 minutes.

Florida State on the other hand is coming off of a one-point victory over Marquette where they were down 30-18 at the half. Florida State’s schedule has been rather weak so far, which has me believing that their record may be the product of inferior competition rather than superior play.

If their recent performances have been any indication the Buckeyes will come out strong both shooting and on defense and try to limit the size difference of the Florida State big man down low. The size and skill of the FSU center will keep them in the game for the first ten minutes but the Buckeyes outside shooting and ball movement will just be too much for them to handle. If the scarlet and gray are cold from outside you can expect to see a lot of cutting and ball movement freeing up Turner and David Lighty in the second half. In the end however the Seminoles are just too young and the Buckeyes just too talented to let this one slip away.

Prediction: Ohio State 68 – Florida Sate 55

“Whether he knew of this deficiency himself I can’t say. I think the knowledge came to him at last–only at the very last. But the wilderness found him out early, and had taken vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude–and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core.”

The time has come for our brave warriors to travel deep into the heart of darkness. To rise above their inner horrors. To overcome the draw of the savages and expose the hollowness at the core of what has become an 8-1 Penn State team. Yes <del datetime="2009-11-06T19:10:15+00:00">Kurtz</del>…I mean Coach Paterno is in too deep and although he lost control of the beasts for a short while last year, he seems to have regained composure and eliminated the violators–those who would taint the mission with disciplinary problems and suspensions.

<del datetime="2009-11-06T19:10:15+00:00">Marlow</del>…I mean Coach Tressel must now go in and take back what is rightfully ours. And while the fever may be taking hold, Paterno has secured his reputation. His legacy will survive the beating to come…

I could go on with the allusion but I’m sure you get the point. In order to win tomorrow Pryor and the offensive line must overcome their own personal horrors, rise up against the savages and play with the talent they have been given. If you remember the story to which I allude, Marlow fends off an early attack by scaring the natives with the steam whistle and that’s exactly what the Buckeyes need to do. They need to throw Penn State off balance quick and force them to play from behind–a test they have not faced yet this year.

If they do, it will have a big impact on the crowd. Take the crowd out of the game and the players will feel it. That is when the memories of Iowa, the panic will set in. The Buckeyes need to get them on their heels and not let them up. Hit them over and over again and this game will be ours.

As we head into Penn State, questions abound about the Buckeye offense. There’s no question the defense can get the job done but can the offensive line protect Pryror, will he throw with poise and confidence and will Penn State be able to stop the Buckeyes when they do turn to the run?

All valid questions and all keys to the game. However, don’t think for a minute that we’re the only ones with a few question marks hanging above our heads. Thing is, most Penn State fans are so wrapped up in their white t-shirts and defensive stats that they are missing a key point which in any other team would raise concern. This is Penn State though so let them enjoy their moment. They don’t get it often.

While the Penn State stats look good on paper, consider that their seven wins come against Akron, Syracuse, Temple, Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Michigan and Northwestern. Not really a powerhouse of college football. Last week Northwestern gave the Lions something to think about. The Penn State defense that we keep hearing about also allowed 17 points against Illinois — one of the least effective offenses in the Big Ten this year.

Against Iowa, their only opponent worthy of discussion, they completely fell apart. The Iowa defense hit Daryll Clark over and over again exposing more then a minor weakness. Clark wore the shock on his sleeve the entire game and limped off the field at the end with his head hanging low.

But not to be deterred, once again Penn State fans charge forward yet again drowning in overconfidence. They’re finding great glee in the photo of Pryor hanging his head after last year’s loss forgetting of course that another inch to the right and Pryor not only would have made the first down ending the game, he very easily could have been headed to the end zone all alone. They find strength in the Buckeyes sleepwalk against Purdue. They desperately search for the magic of the “white out” of 2005 which no longer shocks anyone although it is cute to see them try– what with the little tent city and all.

In a final act of “Won’t you be our rival…please?” they have taken to photo shopped pictures (Block O Nation collected them here) declaring it “Hate Week.”

Sorry Penn State but we’ve already got a team to hate. Try as you might, at this point you’re just not worth my ilk.

CorrectionApologies to Syracuse. They are 3-5 (0-3 in conference) with one of their wins coming over Northwestern. I corrected the earlier error in the post above.

While those of us in Buckeye nation find ourselves deeply entrenched in a debate over the development of our offense, leave it to an SEC blog to really capture the essence of the Ohio State offense in a way that only an outsider can do:

Grimly fingerbanging its way through its schedule without having to resort to actually using the designed implement for scoring, Ohio State is saving putting it in the endzone properly for marriage but using all kinds of football outercourse to protect its chastity. Jim Tressel’s defensive chastity belt has them allowing just 12 points a game. As bad as you may think they are offensively, they’re worse offensively: 86th in the nation, and 108th in the nation in passing offense. Date-rapin’ Iowa looks like Texas Tech comparatively, and Terrelle Pryor runs the passing attack with the verve and accuracy of a young point-shaving Art Schlicter. Kurt Coleman taking direct snaps and dare people to touch him might be more impressive, because he scares the bark off trees and leads the usual Ohio State defense. Boner time: 21st in punting!

I mean really, where do you go from there? Stunningly accurate if not discomforting metaphors aside, the idea of playing Coleman on both sides of the ball is one I hadn’t heard. At this point it isn’t sounding all that bad.

Tressel ended Tuesday’s press conference saying that the goal for the second half of the season was for Pryor to notch up 110 yards rushing per game, throw for another 250/game and run out the season 6-0.

With Pryor’s talent, it is a fairly realistic goal. As I expressed in an earlier discussion on this blog, the question is, can the coaching staff get him there.

At this point, what this offense needs is a good old fashioned slumpbust. Something to bring back the old confidence. An easy mark to prove to that they’ve still got game. A game that gives Tressel the opportunity to mix up the play calling, to take a few risks. But where? Who? We’re halfway through the season. The out of conference pushovers are well behind us. If only there were a team that could give our offense the opportunity to take a few risks, to grow, develop and gel as a cohesive unit. If only there were such a team…

Buckeyes take on Purdue
The Bucks head to Purdue this weekend to take on the Boilermakers. Although they opened the week as only a 13 point favorite, you’d better get your picks in quick as the spread is now up to 15. It actually moved up a point as I was writing this post.

I may actually buy one of these myself -- sort of a 'lost causes' type of thing

It’s no wonder the spread is going up as the Buckeye defense scored more then that against Wisconsin — a team with a good offensive line. Put the Buckeye D up against a turnover prone Purdue and this game could get ugly real fast.

As for the offense, if they’ve ever had something to prove, this is the time to do it. Don’t think for a minute Tressel hasn’t heard the critics. He’s been bombarded all week with questions and doubts. Aggressive play calling combined with a top performance from Pryor is exactly what this offense needs to get back on track again. Purdue’s been giving up 30 points per game this season. Now’s the time to build confidence against Purdue, develop technique against Minnesota and solidify it all against New Mexico State. By then the Buckeyes will be ready when they head into Happy Valley.

Before we get carried away though, Purdue almost got past Notre Dame. Then again, who hasn’t? If the defense plays even half what they did against Wisconsin, they could double the 15 point spread and then some.

Update: The Columbus Dispatch is reporting this morning (Thurs) that Pryor feels that this is going to be the breakout game. He says there’s a sense that the offense is ready to explode, he sees what he needs to do different and from here out, it’s a new game. As I mentioned above, Tressel outlined the goal for the next six.

Naturally, being the Tressel bred coach that he is, Siciliano was quick to back peddle. While I believe that a big part of our offensive breakout may be the fact the Purdue is not very good, Sicilano wanted to be sure to clarify. From the Columbus Dispatch:

“I don’t want it misinterpreted that he says, ‘Purdue is not very good, and we can go out and score 40′ — nuh-uh,” Siciliano said. “That’s not what he was getting at. He was just saying he believes, ‘Hey, it could come together this week.’ “
