You may notice by my pen name that I live in Annapolis, Maryland. And although I’m first and foremost a Buckeye fan, I enjoy following Navy football. Football at the academy is an entirely different thing then the football we know at Ohio State. I see the Mids around town and let’s just say their college experience is a little different then my experience at Ohio State.
And unlike the Ohio State football program, leaving early for the pros really isn’t a problem for Navy. Heck, even leaving after college for the pros isn’t really an issue. Instead of securing lucrative NFL contracts, upon receiving their diploma, the men of the Navy football team will head out to sea in service of their country.
As a tribute to our men who serve and to the Navy football team, there is a fan based movement underway (at least I think it’s a grass roots thing) to honor the Mids. When the Navy football team takes the field on opening day, the plan is for everyone in Ohio Stadium to stand and cheer. And no, we’re not talking polite golf clap here. Make it just as big as if it were the Buckeyes coming out across the field.
Personally, I think it’s a great tribute. Spread the word, tell everyone you know who will be at the game. Let’s show them what Buckeye fans are all about and give the Mids an honor to remember.
