O.K. This week’s Big Ten Blogger’s Round Table comes to us from Iowa blog Black Hart Gold Pants. I knew things were rough out there in the corn fields, but I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten.
I also notice that the questions are getting more and more…ahem…creative.
And with that, awaayyy we go.
1. You know what? Screw your team. I hate your team right now; I’m an Iowa fan, and I have anger in my heart. Name your top conference rival, and assess their season to date. If you haven’t played them yet (and I don’t think anyone has), how are you going to do when that fateful day comes?
You thought I was kidding about things being rough in Iowa.
What exactly should I do with this question. There is no need to name our top rival. I refuse to do it here. There is not a college football fan in the country that doesn’t know who our top rival is. This is a good question for the Little Nine (I may get kicked out of the forum for that) but for those of us deep inside this thing so politely referred to as a “rivalry” it is hard to explain to the outside world.
As for their season so far…well they beat Penn State. Oh wait, that one might get thrown out.
I’m not going to do much assessing here. If you’d like, you can purchase Appalachian State T-shirts at the link to your left.
As for the game in November. It will be a great game. It is always a great game. While last year’s #1 vs #2 match up was one for the history books, this year is more of a classic game.
That school has a team of seniors that could be in the pros right now. They came back for two reasons, a shot at the National Championship and to beat Ohio State. I believe this is the only time either team has seen a senior class without a win in this great rivalry.
Their hopes for a national championship have been dashed. They still have a shot at a Big Ten title. If they make it that far, they will get the shot at a BCS game, which this same class has also never won. If they lose the rest of their games in the Big Ten, then the game against Ohio State will mean everything to them. It will be the one thing that can salvage their season.
The game is in their house and no matter what happens, they have everything to play for.
So do we. We may be looking at a National Championship game ourselves but that doesn’t really matter. To shut their seniors down once and for all would be the ultimate for Ohio State. Tressel knows how to beat Michigan. Carr has forgotten how to beat Ohio State.
Finally, for those of you who don’t know, let me let you in on a little secret. We Buckeyes love LLLLLLoyd Carr. We don’t want to see him go.
No matter what, the game in November will be the best of the season. It will determine the success or failure of both teams’ seasons.
2. If your season to date was an album (or CD, for all you young hippety-hoppers), what would it be and why?
Fables of the Reconstruction – R.E.M.
At the beginning of the season, everyone was looking for this to be a “rebuilding” year for Ohio State. Buckeye fans claimed we were “reloaded.” Regardless, this could be yet another season of which legends are made.
3. If you had three minutes alone in a locked room with any coach from your team and you could bring any item along (nothing sexual, tOSU fans), which coach would you choose, what would the item be, (and how badly would you pummel Ken O’Keefe) why would you choose that item?
(This coming from the guy with the pink locker room.)
Coach Tressel and two words — “Thank you.”
BONUS QUESTION
4. Your best friend Harry has a brother Larry. In five days from now he’s gonna marry. He’s hoping you can make it there if you can coz in the ceremony you’ll be the best man.
Subquestion A: Larry is obviously a loser. He has so few friends, he has to ask his brother’s best friend to be his best man. What Big Ten team does he favor when not playing with Lord of the Rings figurines?
Normally I would say Michigan but I’m starting to think it’s Iowa.
Subquestion B: Five days from now is Saturday. Your team is on the road. Do you (A) stay home and watch the game; (B) road trip, or; (C) say “neato,” check your libido, and roll to the church in your new tuxedo?
Actually, I start posting to the blog. You can get to any Big Ten school within a days drive, two if you take your time. If it’s a bowl game however…
Watching Super Bowl between Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns is just too good to be true.
