As Florida Gator fans sped out of Jacksonville Monday night proudly waiving their middle fingers and cussing at Buckeyes fans who happened to cross their path, they placed the final touch on a weekend that clearly defined the difference between these two schools. Traditionally, Buckeye Nation turns to their football team as a representation of the greatness which is The Ohio State University but every now and then we must look beyond the events on the field. We must look to the bigger picture. We must look to the pride, the traditions and the people that make The Ohio State University, “THE Ohio State University.”
While the rest of the college football world may cite the struggles of our football team in the Gator Bowl, by the time our young men walked onto the field Buckeye fans had won something much bigger. Although this “something” transcends mere words, it was readily apparent for those who were there to bear witness.
One would think that after the difficulties of this season and the let down of playing in the Gator Bowl, Ohio State fans would take a year off from their annual bowl travels and enjoy the New Year holiday at home. Add the fact that Jacksonville is about as far from Gainesville as Columbus is from Cincinnati and it would be easy to assume that the 2012 Gator Bowl would amount to a home game for the Florida Gators. I assure you, this was not the case. Buckeye fans were there in force and provided nothing if not a lesson for Gator fans in how to support your school.
The glaring difference in these two schools first became apparent at the Gator Bowl parade. As The Ohio State Marching Band passed it was immediately obvious to those who were new to TBDBITL that this was no ordinary marching band. Legendary band director Jon Woods lead the formation and you could see that this was a highly polished group. Lines were tight and the step was perfect. Assistant directors were evenly spaced along the rows with eyes forward at strict attention. When they played, their sound filled the streets with a power that rivaled the hot rods and Harley Davidsons which had passed earlier in the parade.
Then came the Florida Gators Marching Band. Assuming that they too enjoyed traditions as much as the Buckeyes, I turned to a group of Florida fans and asked them if the band had a nickname expecting them to respond with the Florida equivalent of TBDBITL. They all looked at me somewhat puzzled and laughed saying…uhm…”The Florida Marching Band?”
For the record folks, they are “The Pride of Sunshine.” And to the Gator fan who didn’t know, your mascot is named “Albert” not “Alfred” and his girlfriend is “Alberta.”
Suffice it to say that although I’m sure they do their best, the “Pride of Sunshine” is not a college marching band in the sense that Buckeye fans have come to know college marching bands. Without going into it any further than I already have, I will leave it to the pictures to tell the story.
A Tale of Two Pep Rallies
If you’ve never been to a pre-bowl pep rally, they are a sight to behold — at least for Ohio State fans. At this year’s Gator Bowl pep rally, two-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin spoke to the crowd about how Ohio State made him the man he is today. Ohio State University president Gordon Gee spoke about the future of this great university and Ohio State football coach Luke Fickell told the crowd that he is and always will be a Buckeye exclaiming, “To go anywhere else would be an impossibility.”
Dressed in sports coats and ties the band played the pregame show and the crowd (which one Florida fan estimated to be in the thousands — a very unscientific count to be sure) sang along to the lines “We’ll win the game or know the reason why.” As they played, President Gee walked amongst the crowd talking to the fans, Archie Griffin signed autographs and even Coach Fickell stopped to shake a couple of hands before heading back to the team and pre-game preparations. As fans made their way back to the car celebrity fans Buck I Guy, Big Nut and BuckeyeMan could be found walking among the crowd stopping to pose for a picture or two or just share their love for Ohio State with a fellow Buckeye.
At the Florida pep rally, well, the band played.
There were no dignitaries, no Florida Gator legends and no dramatic speeches. If the university president was there, his presence was not noted. The cheerleaders did their best to sway a crowd eager to return to the neighboring strip mall in search of post Christmas bargains.
Game Day
If you happened to walk through the hotel of the Hyatt Regency Monday morning around 10 a.m., you would have seen an endless parade of Ohio State Alumni decked out in their best game day colors as they headed up the escalators to the Alumni brunch. At the brunch they would once again hear Archie talk about growing together as a family as we worked through this difficult year and have a chance to talk for a few moments with Dr. Gee or Athletic director Gene Smith.
Florida fans were few and far between. I thought at first they were off at their own alumni brunch but at least the alumni I spoke to knew nothing of such organized alumni events.
A Tale of two Football Teams
Although I had hopes that the Ohio State offensive coaching staff would pull out all the stops in hopes of leaving some sort of legacy as they went out the door. Unfortunately, I think Jim Bohlman and the rest of the offensive coaching staff had already left the building. And for that much, the players on the field may have been looking past this game to the future that will become The Ohio State Buckeyes. The players were well aware that Urban Meyer had scheduled an early meeting the next morning and they were to go straight from the locker rooms to the airport to Columbus. I have the utmost respect for Coach Fickell but I think the Gator Bowl demonstrated again the coaching hierarchy in the 2011 Ohio State coaching staff. Fickell was the head coach but I can’t get over the sense that he didn’t have much pull with the Coach Tressel left overs.
So as the Florida Gators take great pride in the fact that they are now 2-0 against Ohio State in recent bowl games, it is also important to step back and take a look at the context of these two games. The Florida Gators had good fortune to meet the Buckeyes directly after both the highest point in the history of Ohio State football and also after the lowest. In 2007, the BCS national championship was a mere afterthought to the true national championship game which had been played against Michigan in November. This year’s Gator Bowl saw an Ohio State team looking to put a difficult year behind them and already moving on to the glory that will come to the 2012 Ohio State Buckeyes.
Although there may be disappointment in the loss suffered in Jacksonville, take pride in the fact that there is much more to a great university than a football program. At the 2012 Gator Bowl, Buckeye Nation once again proved that The Ohio State University is in fact the TBDUITL.

Sorry it took me so long post this. Do me a favor and spread it around. I’d hate to see it go to waste because I missed deadline.
GO BUCKEYES.
Just a few notes, Jim: You misspelled Archie’s last name and Buckeyeman is one word according to Larry.
You also forgot to include the bit about a certain student of The Ohio State University taking bragging rights in a fan of the game competition PROVING we have the better fan base.
I mentioned that this is first draft stuff right? Thanks for the corrections though.
You’re right, I did leave a couple of things out. For those of you who don’t know, TBP is a budding celebrity Buckeye fan. He was the winner of the Gator Bowl’s Tax Slayer Player of the Game and did a great “Tebow” on the field at halftime.
The other thing I missed was that quote from Coach Fickell. This is from the press conference, work it in as you will:
“…But our guys feel bad. There is no doubt. This is the tough side of athletics in general. You work and prepare so hard for everything that you do, you know, and this feeling is not something that ever goes away. But I think that’s a motivational thing. I told them afterwards in the locker room that this feeling should hurt.
When you remember that feeling, it makes you better. You’re going to be in that situation some point in your life whether it’s athletically or something else, and how you handle those situations are going to be a true side of a man.”
TPB*
trollolololol
Fickell being retained was the best thing for the program as a side note though.
Yeah…that’s what I said…TPB.
Does shredding the Gator’s band make you feel better about losing despite being a pre-season favorite to win the B1G? Did you ask a second fan what their band is called? Or was a sample-size of one sufficient to make your point? What would be a scientific count, a million? How’s that 2007 NC trophy look on campus? I wish my team quit on its coach to start prepping for next year, too. You separate independent thoughts with punctuation about as well tUSO (Pryor reference) investigates allegations against its athletes. And no, you made no mention of this being a “draft”, you just look really, really poorly educated and biased.

“The Buckeye Blog
College football analysis and opinion with a heavy Ohio State bias”
Do no outsiders read the tag line at the top?
Annapolis said he was writing this in his last blog BEFORE the Gator Bowl. So the context is all in your head. Deal with it.
No, shredding the Gator band doesn’t make me feel any better about losing nor was it what I intended to do. What makes me feel better about losing was seeing the dignity, pride and honor that was represented by the Ohio State fans, alumni and dignitaries who showed up to support their school. Something I did not see from the Florida fans.
Ask any Ohio State fan and they will tell you, our 2007 national championship trophy shines brighter than ever. You can see it in the gold pants worn around the neck of every Ohio State football player who played in that game. Don’t know what I’m talking about, ask any Buckeye fan. Unlike the Florida fans who could not remember the name of the mascot, Buckeye fans will be able to tell you what I mean.
And for the record, the Florida Marching band was just fine. The t-shirts with the alligator was a great design (the gator ‘chomps” as trombone player moves his arms). I’m only pointing out that they carry themselves in a much different manner than the Ohio State marching band. It was just one piece of the bigger picture I was trying to capture above. Buckeye fans who read this will understand what I mean. Those of you who don’t understand, never will.
Nobody on this site ever promised you an “unbiased” view. You will note at the top of the page, I promise just the opposite.
Blatant falsehood – Everybody knows that many of those treasured gold pants ended up with Eddie Rife and his other pals at Fine Line Ink in exchange for cash and tatts.
You know you’re trying a little too hard to make a point when you (claim to) find a Gator fan who doesn’t know the mascot’s name is Albert. I mean, really, if I turned over enough Bucknuts, I am sure I could find one who didn’t know the head Nut’s name was Brutus but I wouldn’t be ignorant enough to think that was indicative of the entire fan base.
Don’t get me wrong, I see the temptation because it’s soooo easy and kinda fun too. As a result, I now KNOW that all Ohio State fans are so uncouth and classless, they pose with dead bodies to form O-H-I-O. My evidence? These four people in the picture at the following link. Well, technically, three people and a corpse but you get the idea.
http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i328/Sports4Sport/Ohio.jpg
You mean this guy here? http://www.thebuckeyeblog.com/dead-o-h-i-o/
Maybe I looked to the wrong people on both occasions (for the record I was not wearing Ohio State gear of any sort and was trying to report as a neutral source for another project) I found it surprising that there was enough confusion that I needed to confirm online. And these were people dressed in Florida clothing who had come to see a bowl game.
Yes, the gold pants from recent years may have been traded for tattoos but none of the players on the 06 team were involved in that situation. At some point, how many gold pants do you really need? The point is, those gold pants are our national trophy.
Oh, I get your point. I think even most tosu fans would find that to be at least moderately delusional but that doesn’t mean I didn’t get it. While we’re at it, thanks again for bending over and propelling us to the previously unforeseen heights of consecutive football and basketball national championships in the spring of 2007. We couldn’t have done it without you. Really. 41-14. 84-75. But you’ll always have those gold pants. Well, not you, personally, but it sounds like a helluva consolation prize regardless.
Ugly homemade pants pendant != national championship
LMAO!…Hilarious!!!
Gainesville is a small town with one stop light, a general store, and one feed store. Gainesville
is RED NECK country, you know where Jimbob and Leroy live. You drive through Gainesville and all you see is horses and pigs running around. Florida rents it’s band, the only music in the town is a fiddle and pots and pans they bang on with a wooden spoon. Eveytime I drive north I avoid Gainesville, I have been through there once and the smell was terrible. It’s not on the AAA list of places to visit, they actually have a * on the bottom of the page telling people to avoid
Gainesville at all cost.
Yeah, but we’re just a bunch of crackers.
And yet they continue to dominate such a prestigous university in sports like “THE OHIO STATE”.
Oh well, at least you have a great band and prominant dead fans in a casket you can be proud of. Congrats.
Yes, Gainesville is a college town, as opposed to a city with a college. But what about your city? Do people actually like it there? Do people want to live there?
No…they don’t.
http://www.theatlanticcities.com/arts-and-lifestyle/2012/01/do-rankings-affect-our-opinions-cities/883/
Wow. Sour grapes, anyone?
No. Not really. The football program at Florida is pretty good. It’s just that none of you students, alumni or fans deserve it.
That’s a mighty big statement to throw out there. All this from one Bowl game? I’ve been going to The Swamp ever since I was a little girl. The football program is great, not just “pretty good”. The students and alumni, as well as the fans, indeed deserve it. While I respect your right to have an opinion, albeit a crappy one, your view seems pretty cock-eyed. Or should I say, Buck-eyed?
Having never been to The Swamp, I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt Flgirl. The thing that surprised me is that the Gator Bowl was right in your back yard and yet it appeared that the Florida fans barely made the effort. I’m not the only one who felt this way. The Florida fans I was working with agreed.
This is the definition of futility. We should just let them “feel better about losing” to us and simply thank them for coming down in droves and spending money in our great state so we can continue to not have a state income tax.
BTW, Ohio’s state income tax is 6.24%. If that’s not bad enough, the CITY of Columbus Ohio charges an ADDITIONAL 2.5% income tax! No wonder people leave that state in droves. Unfortunately, far too many of them head south on I-75 and end up in Florida but we shall overcome that too, especially since we can always point out 41-14 and 84-75 from the two national championship games in 2007.
No, actually, everything I write or say is a fact regardless of my ties.
I think you are confusing the word ‘fact’ with ‘delusion.’
Wow… what an elitist prick. This entitled attitude is why so many people hate fans of OSU, Notre Dame, USC, and Alabama. Seriously, get over yourself.
You are not special.
Bitter much?
Unbelievably tacky article rife with unending jealousy and sour grapes, enough to squash and make a CASE of ‘Whine’ out of. Honestly, I showed this article to a Buckeyes friend of mine and he said about the same thing… that it was shamefully bitter.
Talk about ‘bad’ fans. I’d love you to see the hordes of OSU fans who invaded the many home internet Gator boards leading up to the 2006 BCSCG and read your ‘classy’ bretheren’s comments. It was the same with a few OSU lurkers before this Gator Bowl too.
Pot, meet kettle.
It’s “articles” like these that made me take time off from coaching FOOTBALL and head to O-H-I-…how’s it go again?
I’ll give you that one Urban. I’m afraid you may actually have trouble spelling that out myself.
Has the tosu band been invited to the Olympics in London? Just asking.
You really want to go down that road? I’m just asking.
Ah, yeah. Did they? The Pride of the Sunshine will be there. I’m just answering for you. Comparing bands? Really? Okay. You win. Our band sucks.
It isn’t about the bands. It isn’t about the pep rally. It isn’t about the “rednecks” in the swamps of Florida or the hills of Appalachia.
It is about the impressions that were formed during one weekend of college football. The Florida fans and alumni were not well represented at the Gator Bowl. Ohio State fans were.
I went down there fully expecting this to be a Florida home game. It was not.
If I’ve said something in my post above that was incorrect about the weekend, then correct it.
Still waiting for an answer to my original query. That is all. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Florida all though the games outcome was not to your liking. You seem to paint with a broad stroke when it comes to judging the UF fan base. I wish you would have asked me those same questions. Maybe I could have changed your outlook. I have no problem with your blog. It is what you set out to write and more power to you.
ZOMG OLYMPICS?! FLORIDA’S BAND IS SO KEWL!!!!111111
Seriously, has the band won the Sudler Trophy? No. I think not. Even Florida A&M has won it. Fact.
The band has also been featured in six presidential inaugurations.
/debate
You got me. No Olympics. I was going to mention the presidential inaugurations but TPB beat me to it.
The pOSU band had a marvelous performance of “Titanic” during the BCS CG in 07. Gotta give your band extra props for foreshadowing that great suckeye performance.
You got me. No Olympics. I was going to mention the presidential inaugurations but TPB beat me to it.
OH NOEZ THE SAME OLYMPICS NO ONE WATCHES EXCEPT FOR BOUNCEY BALL
BTW – UF’s band is The Pride of THE Sunshine. How ironic.
Wow man. I grew up near Columbus, but moved away to Florida. I stayed in state, and went to school at UF. It was great. Gainesville is one of the best college towns in the country. There are some really ignorant comments here.
The state of Florida has plenty of embarrassments, but I’d say they are in close competition with Ohio, especially as you get more near to the Ohio River. There are no winners when you debate hillbillies vs. rednecks. There’s just comedy. Both fan bases have their marks of shame.
But at the end of the day, you would do yourself a service by saying, “Good game, Florida. You beat us again, but thanks for sloppy seconds on the basket case of a coach.”
And to you I say, “Congrats on your band.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3n0vBcW5fc
Wow… Sad and Pathetic.
I have to sit back and laugh at all of this.
FLORIDA FANS CAME TO AN OHIO STATE BLOG AND DON’T LIKE WHAT THEY READ. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
Die in a fire.
It’s not that we don’t like what we just read…quite honestly it’s hilarious. Whatever helps you guys sleep at night. But for you, and your OSU kin, I hope you guys realize other impartial readers will look at this blog as representative of your fanbase, further adding humiliation to an already downtrodden school.
No, you didn’t like what you read. The end.
That’s pretty much the kind of column I’d expect from a fan of the team that lost the game.
As for Ohio State’s class, I heard all of it I wanted to hear before the ’06 national championship game – “you don’t deserve to be on the same field as us,” “wish we were playing Michigan, they could give us a game,” “hope you guys can keep it close for the first quarter,” “you suck, go home now before we embarrass you,” etc. etc.
Your strings are showing, puppet.
Congrats on winning the pep rally. Maybe your football team should play our band. Maybe that’s a speed you would find more comfortable. Do you care to compare cheerleaders?
Also…You make yourself seem ignorant and uneducated (tOSU so no surprise) with your false rant about the beautiful town of Gainesville.
Many LOLz sent your way my friend. Good luck getting the quantity of fast guys Suburban Meyer needs for his system, to leave the beauty of Florida for the cankles of Ohio.
http://tinyurl.com/ycr88bz
Non-Buckeyes won’t understand. They see Florida as having whipped us in both football and basketball for national championships…and now in another bowl game, and hell, I forgot where I was going with that. Anyway, we still have jorts jokes, a better band with better instruments, and snow without skiing. And even though everybody is laughing at us, it doesn’t mean that we can’t pretend that we are getting the last laugh.
Screw you Florida (except for your weather and your pretty girls…we’ll take as much of each as you can help us out with!)
Go Buckeyes
Cool story, bro.
Nice article. I appreciate you taking the time to reflect upon the positives of that bowl trip and hand out some kudos in how we “won” in some aspect. And while it didn’t happen on the field, we always have the proverbial “next year”.
What I wanted to add was something I’ve noticed due to my families transient lifestyle as a military family. We move about every 4 years. And as such we have had the chance to partake from different cultures around the United States. The biggest difference I have found and I think lends a large amount of influence to the differences in fan bases that you notice is that college football in Ohio is ingrained into our culture very deeply. And as such many put it at a very high level of importance. While those from Ohio read this and say, “duh, of course buckeye football is important”, realize it isn’t like that everywhere. Matter of fact, the kind of personalization we share with our football team in such a widespread manner is very rare in this country. I’ve only lived in two places that came close to emulating it. Nebraska and Alabama. Florida is a strange animal because the culture there isn’t Floridian. It is an odd blend of New York jewish hybrid culture that has nothing to do with the area. The other parts are Haiti, Cuban, and Hispanic. Those cultures do not care about football. The Jewish communities don’t care about football. They are retirement communities.
There is very little home grown to the extent that we do in Ohio in regards to college football. The fact that we go .500 and have the worst season in 20 years and still sell out every home game speaks volumes. You let the gators start losing and those fans bolt.
@Paul
I ran into a couple gator fans in a bar and grill a couple years back. They ran their mouths much like you like to do. Came up to my table where i was having dinner with my wife and children because I had a buckeye jersey on. When i told then in so many words to get lost, they decided to wait for me in the parking lot after I left. What I learned that night was if you pop a Florida fan right on the gob he likes to run, they shut the phvck up pretty quick. I dropped little Glass Joe from Gainesville and then his friend decided he was sorry. But get this. Instead of helping his friend up from the asphalt of the parking lot…..he left him laying there and ran.
Thank God for the internet, huh Paul?
“Thank God for the internet, huh Paul?”
Yeah, I let you make up cute little stories about beating up Gator fans.
@jonathan ….Your little story reminds me of my sons diapers. In that in that it smells a little funny and is full of crap….pure bs.
Your assessment of Florida is laughable. Stereotypical nonsense. I also lived in Ohio for a while. Cincinnati in fact. Nice state if you think a landlocked icebox that everyone is fleeing like rats on a sinking ship is nice.
Holy inferiority complex.
That might be the funniest thing I have ever read. Ever.
Ohio St has shinier instruments and one fan won a fight in the parking lot of the bar and grill. Many congrats. I’ve read the “our fans are classier,” “their players are thugs,” and “I whipped two of their fans’ asses” comments many times. Those comments are always written by losing fan bases.
BTW – Gator fans don’t dislike Buckeye fans nearly this much. We simply enjoy the pleasure of our season-ending victories.
“In 2007, the BCS national championship was a mere afterthought to the true national championship game which had been played against Michigan in November.”
LOL. You do know that both OSU and Michigan LOST their BCS bowl games that year, right? Do you have the slightest clue how the “true national champion” is crowned in the BCS era? I don’t think it’s by losing by 27 points while gaining an amazing 82 total yards of offense…
But you’re right about one thing, The True National Championship Game in 06/07 was played a month earlier … between Florida and Arkansas.
Anyone who thinks that there’s any difference between the fan bases of two major universities like Florida and OSU (or FSU, for that matter) is deluding themselves. They’re also showing the world that they’re on the low end of the bell curve when it comes to intelligence. You find all types in such diverse communities.
Major sour grapes when you’re left bragging about the sideshow instead of the game.
My only problem with Ohioans is the mass exodus from Ohio to Florida during the winter, some simply to tell us how great it is where they came from, and how stupid we natives are.
If Floridians suck so much, granny and grandpa haven’t gotten the memo.
Good luck with Meyer. I heard that he’s studied how to balance family and football now, after he was miraculously cured by Dr. Lou in the parking lot of the ESPN studios. :^D OSU is much less stressful than Florida (lol).
What makes one non OSUfan really chuckle is you seem proud the President Gee spoke at the pep rally. Most Americans who heard Gee say he was concerned that Tressel would fire him view Gordon Gee as a laughing stock rather than president of a great university.
Alright OHIO fans. Stop pretending you’re Michigan. Your university has no Honor outside of football and your fans are savages–widely considered the worst fanbase in America. There’s a reason everyone dislikes you and it has nothing to do with your football players who are actually class acts on the field. It’s you the fans. Anyway, this video demonstrates what your fanbase is all about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AtaeCMqnPQ&feature=related
A lot of the SEC fan bases I’ve talked to have shared that you’re pretty damn awful too. It’s all subjective. Academics here are actually taken quite seriously and I would have never chosen to come here if my degree wasn’t recognized internationally. We are the better university.
Deal with it.
Yes, Academics at OSU are taken more seriously than in the SEC. Just ask Larry Grant.
Recognized internationally? By whom? Look, we get it, OSU according to the latest rankings is 3 spots ahead of Florida. If you honestly think people look at these rankings and see the slight difference as a determinate of a much better school, than you are truly an OSU grad.
No, he’s right. It is recognized internationally. The thing is, though, you Florida folks don’t have to worry about international recognition because your degree will actually help you get a job in the U.S.
Incorrect.
Did I say shit about rankings?
No, I did not.
Your degree wouldn’t help you if you worked for my company. I’d fire your arrogant little ass in a heartbeat.

TPB, You hit the fucking nail on the head.
I was also at the gator bowl and the 2007 butt-kicking. After observing Ohio State fans first hand, only 1 thought crossed my mind. Do they not have slimfast in Ohio?
What an odd, sad little post this is. All fan bases have their good and bad–I’ll choose to not label all OSU fans as ignorant based on this one ignorant blog post. Hell, I’ll even give you the benefit of the doubt that you are just upset at the state of your program. You are the program on probation, not us, remember?.
The National Championship line was the best. Ya, you totally deserved it that year. You couldn’t block us to save Troy Smith’s life. Come on man, give credit when credit is due. We were a vastly superior football team and it showed in the football field.
Best of luck to you and stop posting about my University. GO Gators!
Brian
Well said. Go Gators.
If you can’t beat ‘em at football (and basketball), desperately reach for the subjective victories (and still with the excuses?) where the judge is wearing scarlet and gray colored glasses…
No one is telling you to not take pride in what makes Ohio State great. Go on ahead. But why do you have to try make the University of Florida and its fans look bad? You depict Gator Nation with cussing and middle finger-waiving fans who don’t know our mascot’s name, or our band’s name. Should I return the favor and use this article to depict the tradition of “dignity” and “honor” of Ohio State University? Because if this article is a credible example, then Ohio State is lacking quite a bit in both.
Go Gators.
Way to go Jim!
How can any Redneck from Gainesville talk shit about anywhere else. I have been to your university and all I saw hog pens, and people in overalls covered with patches and sucking on pieces of straw. How can you rednecks talk about someone else not having digity or honor, when the Gator his is loaded with cheating and NCAA violations.
How can any Redneck from Gainesville talk shit about anywhere else. I have been to your university and all I saw hog pens, and people in overalls covered with patches and sucking on pieces of straw. How can you rednecks talk about someone else not having digity or honor, when your Gator history is loaded with cheating and NCAA violations. Why don’t all you Gator faithful do your chores so you don’t flunk out of school when the pigs, horses, and cows don’t get fed.
Carl, you’re highly uneducated and a sad, sad example as a representative for a school like “tOSU”.
You’re a clown and simply make yourself look stupid with the “redneck/pig farmer” insults toward Florida fans.
Gonzo, you have been posting on this blog for a year and I don’t recall any insult thrown you way. If I were You I would mind your own fucking business when it come to what I post about the Florida Rednecks. My hatred for them goes back many, many years, they are all lossers.
“lossers”…..simply outstanding!
http://6inchmove.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/grammar-nazi2.jpg
Maybe you should try posting somthing new and refreshing like…oh, I dunno…something intelligent maybe?
Sorry, this is a blog for Ohio State fans so your wishes have absolutely zero ground here. I only wish, one day, I can post a thrilling grammar lesson. One day.
Thanks for taking that route though, it only proved that you know I’m right that no one cares.
“Maybe you should try posting something intelligent”
“Sorry, this is a blog for Ohio State fans so your wishes have absolutely zero ground here. ”
hilarity ensues
Incorrect, spin doctor.
We like this Carl guy.
Hogs and Pigs and Cows? What was the OSU cheerleading squad doing in G’ville?
The Buckeye fans that are buying into the ideas perpetuated by this post are delusional.
Someone from the middle of Ohio, or just Ohio period, referring to people from Florida as rednecks is puzzling.
We have more metropolitan class cities than you have cities period. We have glamor towns and glitz, You have Cleveland. We have movie stars and celebrities eating lunch beside us at the sidewalk cafe. You have to eat inside because its to cold. We have exotic cultures and great seafood. You have zero culture and what…Cincinnati chili? (Which is OK…I lived there for a year in high school) . We have the Gulf and Atlantic beaches. You have big dirty Lake. We have the beauty of the Keys and the Everglades. You have well….a big dirty lake. We have Disney World, Epcot, Universal Studios, Sea World. You have Kings Island. We have Lebron James. You have….oops sorry about that one… We have a 2-0 record over you in Bowl games and a 1-0 record in Final Fours. You have probation. We have golden southern Belles. You have ashy white cankles. We have beautiful mid sized cities with beautiful arts districts and island escapes, like Ft. Meyers, Sarasota and Venice. You have Akron, Toledo and Dayton.
I mean dude. Why are so many of you moving to Florida? The answers are endless.
But keep lumping us in with redneck neighbors like Georgia and Alabama. We’ll just lump you in with your hee-haw neighbors like West Virginia and Kentucky. Fortunately for us, we are nothing like our neighbors. Unfortunately for you,….you are.
Gator fans—you forgot to take your medication—Fla. is God’s “waiting room”, a great place to sit around and drink ENSURE with the retired community—or hang out with the druggies & skanky women on South beach—you also have the distinction of being the “murder” capitol of the US, and English is no longer the FIRST language in Fla.—you either speak Spanish, or mumble “redneck” slang—as for football, you will never have the tradition or success the Buckeyes have earned over the years—so enjoy 2007—it’s all you will ever have—and you had it because of a coach from OHIO—now we have that coach, a new creative system, much better talent—and a University that is always chosen for political town hall meetings, scientific studies and conferences for cutting edge research with the best minds in the world—our forests & lakes are beautiful and our women are sexy & healthy—Fla. can’t compete with dark wrinkled tans, drugs and hookers on every corner—(ever watch 60 minutes)??—you should be called Gators—you have the same level of education, personality and good looks—your place is in the SWAMP—good ole moonshine and chewin tobacco which I’m sure you share with your swamp slut—CULTURE??—-DISNEY??—a bunch of show biz “wannabees” passing through—-BORING!!—watching paint dry is more exciting—-OHIO has more talent working in LA & NYC than any other state—plus more inventions, fine artists, and people who travel to the best cities & beaches in the world—Key West is for drunk–burned-out writers who like to sit on bug infested piles of dirty sand—and your family life sucks—every amber alert is a child missing in Fla., along with Casey Anthony and all the other serial killers—SO, take your meds, try not to lose your last tooth and prepare to get your ass kicked by the BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Casey Anthony? LOL! Casey Anthony is from Warren, Ohio you genius! LOL. It’s the first place she ran once her trial ended…Most of the criminals you read about are from somewhere else.
Nice one!
Guess you don’t possess one of the great minds cited in your post.
And if all Ohio folks feel like you do… why are they all moving to Florida?
Paul! LOL! You are “sharp as a marble”, and I’m sure a genius among the mental midgets in Fla. LOL! Only a great mind such as yours would throw context and truth out the window to make a feeble point!! Casey Anthony “chose” the trashy environment and lifestyle in Fla., and it suited her and her deeds well. If you had a clue, you would know that environments attract & influence behavior, and where that behavior takes place is the living reality of the circumstance. Criminals are not from “somewhere else” if they are living in Fla., and doing the dirty work there!! Nice try!! And note: Ohio folks mostly retire to Arizona these days, (Fla. has nasty heat & is too dangerous), but folks from NY/NJ still fall for cheap retirement communities built on swamp land. What a scam!!! Are you still confused???
Guess you are just a “legend in your own mind”! LOL!

@msbuck Just wanted to point out that YOU yourself stated: “where that behavior takes place is the living reality of the circumstance” And I just gave you the list of “where that behavior takes place”.
Dangerous, Polluted and Cold. Nice combo.
By the way claiming that your people are flocking to Arizona while stating the qualities of Arizona, does little to explain why the all want to leave in the first place. It also fails to explain why there are so many Ohio folks in Florida.
@Paul: FYI: FBI Onboard Informatics Analysis:
Recent seven year FBI crime reporting data, and crime risk index:
Of the 11 most dangerous cities in the US: (Facts are facts).
#3 Orlando
#7 Miami (only 6% safer than other US cities)
#10 Cleveland
*Looks like it also happens where it’s Dangerous, Polluted and Hot. Stop getting all your information from Jeb Bush! (Storm is raging)!
*Fact: Casey Anthony was born in Ohio, 1986, and the family moved to Orlando, 1989. She was only 3 years old you genius!!! LOL!!! I TOTALLY AGREE SHE IS SCUM NO MATTER WHAT STATE SHE’S FROM!
*Finally, I guess people from all over retire to Fla., but it’s true that AZ. is becoming the new “spot” to retire.
All the best to your 3 little ones—-I have an 18 year old and it goes fast!!!
Man, look at Dr. Gordon Gee’s Teeth … my horses teeth are whiter than they. Don’t you toothbrushes up there?
First learn some grammar!! Then say what you want about Dr. Gee, as I’m sure he really values your opinion!!!! (You should stick to “toothbrushes” down there for your horse)! Oh! don’t forget to “toothbrushes” you own tooth!
I find ironic humor in one using poor sentence structure to critique ones grammar. I also find it funny how one does it while ignoring the fact that Casey Anthony is from Warren, Ohio.
Diversionary tactic: Fail.
I don’t think you have any sense of humor, and you certainly don’t understand the use of irony to clarify grammar structure. (Have you ever read a Neil Simon play, or watched a well written Sit-Com)? The ironic humor comes from one character exposing the failure of another character’s action. As for Casey Anthony, why are you so hung up about her being from Ohio? I find it funny that you keep ignoring the fact that she chose to live and engage in deeply tragic behavior in Fla.!!
Denial tactic: Fail
YOU brought up Casey Anthony. I pointed out the IRONIC HUMOR of where she is actually from.
I also posted a list above of where most of the crime is from . Your argument is drowning in the undertow of its own storm.
By the way…In a moment of seriousness. Casey Anthony is an embarrassment to both states…and as a parent of 3 beautiful little ones, I find her the lowest of scum.
I am a Floridian living who graduated from a small OHIO conference college (Otterbein), and have family who have and are attending both UF an OSU. That said, there has NEVER been any question about my loyalty — it’s the Buckeyes forever. Why? Class. Tradition. Inclusiveness. TBDBITL. Did I mention the band? We attended the parade, the pep rally and the game. Wore our scarlet and gray. On the streets last weekend when I shouted “O-H” I always got back a loud and clear “I-O”. What did I get from the gator fans (few, if any of whom were UF graduates — or graduates of any college for that matter)? Mostly the middle finger. And a lot of yelled abuse and vulgarity. Classless. One blue and orange clad woman did thank us for coming down and bringing our money to Jacksonville. We’ve been here in J-ville for 25 years, but our hearts will always bleed scarlet and gray! O-H!
I-O!!!
Thank you for that Flora. It’s good to see the confirmation of my statements as it would appear that I have hit something of a nerve among the Florida fans.
Oh, and I did my post-grad work at Otterbein.
Give me a break, Flora. How many middle fingers pop up when OSU plays Michigan? Are those gorgeous “F*ck Michigan” tee shirts part of the class and tradition you are so proud of?
Let’s face it. Any school with a competitive football program is going to have a wide array of fans, and it’s very easy to find negative attributes of both Ohio and Florida, as well as the other forty-eight States that make up our nation. This and similar issues will be discussed next season, and the season after that, and the season after that, and the season after that…
I’m out. Maybe next season though, OSU fans, students, or alumni will have better insults to sling other than the tired and lame “redneck” ones.
Unless referring to Gulfport Carl, of course.
Go Gators.
Less typing. More making sandwiches.
No breaks to give you Flgirl — I have lived here (in Jax) for close to 30 years, and have lived it on both sides of the coin. Protest all you want. Point to the Muck Fishigan T-Shirts all you want. Maybe it’s just the Jax branch of the Gator family tree, but the level of pure trash is unrivaled here — and most of it clearly comes from the local yokels who never stepped foot inside a classroom beyond high school (or the 8th grade for that matter). I have a niece who graduated from Florida Law, a brother who went to grad school in Gainesville and another niece who went to UF through her masters. All very classy folks. Also know a good number of local FL grads who are bright, civil people. That STILL does not cover up the junk from the beer swilling locals who wouldn’t know civility if it smacked them in the back of their F-150s.
I live in Columbus. There are no local trashy fans of OSU. Just some good couch-burnin’ folks.
Thank you Flora, for proving my point.
I thought you were done? Hm.
In a post about how well mannered, united and informed OSU fans are… your two most consistent Buckeye posters have degraded women, called Florida fans white trash and bragged about beating up Florida fans.
I find this funny.
I’ve degraded one woman.
WE IZ SO MAD THAT U POSTED THIS BLOG ENTREE. IT’S NOT ENUFF THAT DIS SKOOL HAS BEATEN OHIO STATE IN 2 BOWL GAMEZ AND A NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT WE CARE ABOUT WHAT U THINK OF US TOO WHICH IS EVIDENT FROM ALL TEH PRYOR POSTZ. Your caps lock is on.
We’re not hypocritical. We just take pride in being honorable, classy and dignified while we disrespect and derogate other fans who actually make decent comments worth discussing. We also chastise another fan base for their cussing and middle finger-waiving ways while we wear our shirts that say Fuck Michigan with a middle finger predominantly displayed. Nope. We are not hypocritical. Not in the least. We are Ohio State University, where if we can’t win a game of football, we’ll brag about the class, dignity, and honor, that we display oh so well.

Really? A 2007 Nike promotion? Believe me, Nike was sure to keep me up to date on that back when it happened.
Good one. I forgot about that video. I like the first kid that takes that weak kick and runs away looking like he’s about to cry. Typical OSU fan, there. I bet that statue of Albert could have sacked Troy Smith.
Oh yes. I love it when they spew hate and trash, and after being put in their place can only resort to “This is a Buckeye blog…Go away” I know you may not understand that ‘Da Intrawebs goes beyond your network of moms basements around the state…and that blogs are DESIGNED for public comment and feedback.
I think the truth is your shocked to see a fanbase passionate enough to come to a blog and defend itself, when garbage is yelled from the trailer porch.
And your fanbase is always vocal on our boards to…..that is right up until kickoff/tippoff than you run back to your boards and cry about how mean we are.
Well…Bucknuts, If this blog is yours, than like everything else bucknut, we probably own it too.
Please note that the owner of this site (ie, me) welcomes comments from all. Please also note that I personally never “spewed hate” although the abuse my wife took at the hands of Florida Gator fans in Jacksonville (ie, the finger waving and cussing described in the first paragraph) was a little annoying.
I’m in no way shocked to see a the Florida Gator fan base come out in an attempt to defend themselves on this forum. I am however, somewhat shocked to see how poor a job they have actually done at defending themselves. So far their has been little to nothing proving my original premise wrong.
Yes, it is somewhat “mean” to yell and throw things at a woman walking alone because she is wearing an Ohio State jersey but the comments on this board have sent nobody anywhere to cry about your comments. I’m still waiting for the comments worthy of a response.
I feel I have made several worthy comments. You have some bad fans and so do we. It has been virtually proven by these comments.
I will give you that Brian and my apologies to the good fans out there.
Understood, but do you not realize your post generalized our entire fan base? Why not just be proud of your traditions without disparaging (inaccurately) ours? I’m fully aware this is an OSU blog, but you’re talking negatively about my school so I felt the need to comment/disagree.
Brian, I lived in florida on the west coast, I have been here for almost fourty years. My dislike for Gators goes back almost as far, the local sports talk radio station I listen to is a flagship station for the Gators,I have to listen to all the Gator bullshit most every day. Then there’s the events of the last few years, then along came the Tyler Moeller incident(Which you might not have heard about), makes my hatred for the Gators grow more, that why I use every opportunity to dis the Gators. You have some very rude fans in the Gator nation as Jim has attested to. My feelings will never change until I meet some respectful Gator fans.
Of course we have a lot of rude fans, so does Ohio State and every other big time program. The ratio isn’t any different. Ohio State just gets it worse from us because we have had the upper hand in recent championships. Much like you did to Michigan when you were winning every match-up you had with them the last few years.
Your situation sounds like it adds to your vitriol living in Florida. I’m a Gator living in Atlanta–I know all about it with the Dawgs. It doesn’t make me think all UGA fans are awful. Some are, some aren’t.
Anyway, I think you all are probably tired of hearing from me so best of luck with Urban–you guys certainly have an outstanding coach leading you back to being a top tier football program. I wouldn’t be surprised to meet you again in something much more significant than the Gator Bowl very soon.
Carl, in all fairness, Tyler disappointed me by not taking responsibility for the blocked punt that happened rather than chewing at the bit to whine over being called a saltine. He can shut the fuck up.
Yet for 40 years you have chosen to ignore the fact that I-75 heads north when you apparently dislike 1/2 of the people around you.
Brian, you must remember this is our blog, that gives us the right to say what we what we please. We did not go to a Florida blog and say these things, we stated our feelings on The Buckeye Blog. Your fans are quests on our blog and should act accordingly, as should we if we go to a Florida blog. Jim writes what he see’s and what he knows and what he feels, and I stand behind him. Enough said, I think it’s time to get over the Gator Bowl both teams were six and six entering the game. I have stated on other posts that 6and6 teams have no business going to any bowl.
We were awful this year. I’m not holding anything above your head about beating you in the Gator Bowl. I’m sad we were even in this game. See my post above to Annapolis–I think it answers your questions.
Based on your other posts I don’t think you’ve actually been to Gainesville though. It is an outstanding campus/college town. I am from Southern California and would not have chosen to attend a “hick” school in the slightest so your posts were wildly inaccurate. Just as I’m sure my fellow UF posters were inaccurate about Columbus/Ohio being terrible.
It’s the internet. Let’s be real here. THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS.
I was responding to the redneck comments here….not as much your original post.
However you used pretty general statements to let a few fans who clearly were wrong, represent the entire Gator Nation.
I don’t use that kind of language in any part of my life, much less sports, and have no respect for the ones yelling it at your wife. I think our point here is that generally we are not viewed this way. Come to Gainesville on a gameday, and chances are you will be invited to a tailgate no matter what colors you wear. (Exceptions being Tenn, UGA, FSU *wink*)
You may note that the talk of violence and cursing in this forum has come mostly if not all From OSU fans. Including one joke of a human, fictitiously bragging about physically assaulting a Gator fan.
Then don’t complain when we fire back. OH NOEZ these comments are so hurtful to Florida fans and only prove our pointz!
Sorry man, but I don’t follow your logic considering my reply was to the original author. You seem to just yell a lot.
I was replying to Paul. It’s okay. Jesus forgives you.
It’s amazing to see the response that this post has generated from the Florida Gator fans. It wasn’t written for them nor was it my intention to degrade the Florida Gators in the way those leaving comments on this blog seem to think I have done. Apparently, I have exposed a rash of latent insecurities.
Yes, Buckeye fans are elitist and as I point out in the post above, that elitism is justified. After all the talk about socioeconomic levels and concern over our university president’s dental hygiene, I have seen nothing that contests the point of the original post. Ohio State fans provided a much better showing at the Gator Bowl, a showing for which they can be proud, than did the Florida fans. This for a game that was held in the the Gator’s own backyard.
This post was linked to by both Ohio State and Florida fan forums. One of the comments on the Ohio State forum summed it up perfectly:
“The PRIDE we have, show, and express is why all the others hate us!”
But Jim, THE INTERNET IS THE ULTIMATE LITMUS TEST.
Waaaait wait wait. Insecurities? Because we’re defending our fan base? You point out examples of fans that make us look bad, focus on the negatives that you saw from us Gators, and just because this is done on a Ohio State Blog, that is visible to all, we are out of line in defending ourselves? Like I said before, be prideful. If you had a good showing at the Gator Bowl with the fan base, CONGRATS. But you don’t just celebrate OSU, you try to humiliate the Gators.
Personally, I don’t hate OSU. I pretty much don’t give a crap about OSU. If anything I feel bad for OSU because we’ve owned them just about as bad as you can own another athletic program. You guys have taken a good amount of regular season games from us. But everyone remembers that year we brought home two trophies at the cost of the Buckeyes. I don’t hate OSU at all. It was you that was hating on the Gators. And all that I’ve seen you guys do is rationalize this anti-Gator hate by saying “well, it’s an Buckeye blog…” Heh. I guess it sucks to be a Buckeye fan if this is the stuff you talk about on a Buckeye blog.
And what exactly are we supposed to retaliate to your points? It’s what you saw. Are we just supposed to say, “Nuh uhhhhh.” People have argued how dumb your point is that you found a Gator fan that doesn’t know the name of our mascot. Who can’t find a dumb fan in any fan base? People have pointed out how hypocritical it is for you to shake your head at the cussing and middle finger-waiving from Gator fans that you highlighted, when you see very much of the same on a youtube video from Buckeye fans. As for the rest, unless they were at the game, no one can speak on it. You guys had a better pep rally? Cool. If you kept it at stuff like that, then the backlash probably would be pretty insignificant.
No. You’re not out of line. The fact that there was a response is probably your best defense
Turning to a Michigan video criticizing Ohio State fans as evidence however, not really the best argument. Accusations of that sort have flown back and forth between Ohio State and Michigan for as long as I can remember.
I will say this, there I saw a number of Ohio “hate” shirts in Florida Gator colors worn in Jacksonville. There wasn’t one I hadn’t seen before worn by a Michigan fan.
Ok, I get it, we should ignore video evidence of OSU fans flipping off, chanting profanity at, and picking fights against opposing fans … but accept your account as fact that this is the normal behavior of all us UF fans, and it’s really bad, and makes us a bunch of low-lifes.
Thanks. This makes perfect sense.
I think OSU fans should look in the mirror occasionally.
Wrong again,…..it’s definately the arrogance.
Indeed, there is a great tradition here at OSU. In fact, we hold the Gator Bowl record “Most Throat Punches By a Head Coach During the Game”
Oh no you didn’t!!!
Everyone knows you don’t make an interception in front of Coach Hayes and expect to get away with it.
(And for those keeping score at home, GhostofWooody is now in the lead for best comment.)
I think this blog has done nothing more than show any fan of a school other than OSU that they are arguably the most delusional and self-righteous fans in the country. I will let you in on something. You are not respected by anyone else. Not in your conference, not in ours, not in any. I understand being passionate about your team and your school but this is pathetic. It would have served you better to simply acknowledge that the Gators outplayed OSU and move on. But to run smack over the band or any other aspect is truly sad. I would be angry if I was an OSU fan because this blog is an embarrassment. The holy grail of moral victories. And to even insinuate that OSU represents class and sportsmanship is lost on anyone who has actually experienced a game day with those Buckeye fans. I was at Glendale and I can tell you, I have been to Baton Rouge, Tallahassee, Knoxville, and even Miami and I’ve yet to meet a more vulgar and obnoxious group than that collection of “fans” that represent OSU. But hey, I guess it’s all a matter of perspective right? Funny thing is, I have yet to meet someone who shares a positive opinion of the Buckeye fans as a whole. But elitism is justified because you’re legends in your own minds. Forgive us if we don’t bow down to a team that has historically abused a weak conference, and is now on probation for being so morally upstanding.
But let’s get to the real point of this blog. You’re main point I assume since you just stated so in your last response. You travel well. Awesome. That is what makes your team and fans the beacon to which all other programs should be judged. However, it appears that if anyone is trying to overcome their insecurities it’s you. Because you also took it a step further. You revisited the 2006 National Championship game and made excuses and rationalizations for a 41-14 beating. Maybe losing to the Gators and the SEC yet again has your confidence shaken. Perhaps if you write about all of the good things that OSU has, it’ll make it all better. You’re the punchline of a bad SNL skit. “You’re good enough, and you’re smart enough… and gosh darn it, people like you”. What a joke. I will give you some credit though. This blog has managed to amuse thousands of fans that don’t follow the Bucks. Just know this. They’re not laughing with you, they’re laughing at you.
Cool novel, bro.
Carl makes a good point above. Yes, the Gators rolled over our football team on the field. In the end though, there is no excitement to a 6-7 or a 7-6 season for either school. As Coach Muschamp said in the post-game press conference (and I paraphrase), “We need to remember our reality glasses.”
In this post I looked to the pride and enthusiasm I saw in fellow Buckeye fans even after a difficult year. As I say again, I didn’t see this show through in the Florida fans and that is the point of my post. Ohio State fans stuck with their team even when the chips were down. I’m not sure Florida fans would do the same.
I’ll throw the B.S. flag on that. The point of your post was to try to make yourself and other Buckeyes feel better after laying an egg against Florida and the SEC again. If not, then why mention the 2007 game and make a statement as ridiculous as referring to the Michigan game as the “true” national title game? You used derogatory and insulting generalizations towards UF and their fans. You are the one who is insecure and is grasping for anything at all to make you feel like your team is still relevant and equal to your SEC counterparts. I agree that OSU is a great program, but your fans are by no means as upstanding as you portray.
I didn’t think I’d care about the outcome of this game, at 6-6 it did seem pretty meaningless.
However, given the reaction of the OSU fans in losing, grasping at any way to put UF down to make yourselves feel a little bit better, I’m finding this win quite useful.
” … yeah, but, our president spoke at our pep rally”
” scoreboard”
“… yeah, but our band steps in tighter formation.”
“scoreboard”
” …. yeah, but, we’d have won the national championship in 2006 if only we didn’t have to play UF”
“scoreboard”
“… yeah, but, but, but, win or lose, our guys all get pants pendants.”
“scoreboard”
“…. yeah, but, but, but, but, but, we got your burnt out ex-coach.”
I can’t even begin to imagine how insufferable you guys would be if you had actually done something of relevance in the last 10 years.
You guys can have the best marching band. I’ll take the best football team. 2-0 against the Buckeyes and 1-0 in NCAA Basketball finals. But you guys have a hell of a tuba player…so there’s that.
Folks, it’s a “new money/old money” thing.
The gators have been around forever, but they didn’t get much of a sniff of success until the 90s.
At some point they will learn to win, and lose with class. But until then we’ll have to listen to them pound their chests.
Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, USC = history
florida=no history
I lived in sec country for over a decade and you can always tell new money from old money by the way they like to show off and let everybody know that they have money.
It’s the same thing in sports.
Shoot, I have clothes hanging in a closet that are older than florida’s first league championship banner let alone their couple of NC banners.
Bless their hearts….
Which tells me that you’ve never actually met a Bama fan. I find it hilarious that schools like OSU would minimize the success of a UF because, well they weren’t any good in the 50′s. So what? And if you think Bama or USC won with dignity then I can surely say that you did not attend any championship games that they won. And UF has not been a flash in the pan. UF has experienced more success in the past 20 years than just about every other program, OSU included. So again, I’ll file this under moral victory, yeah OSU you were awesome in the 40′s-60′s whereas UF underachieved. Congrats on that.
Please tell me what national champaionships has Florida won prior to 2005. I can’t wait to heart this.
You have to know that OSU claims bogus championships. For example, you guys finished #2 and #5 in the Coaches/AP poll and LOST your bowl game that year, still somehow claim that as a National Championship.
UF finished #1 in both polls in 1996, so that’s easy.
If you want us to count bogus NCs the same way you do, UF was “awarded” national championship in 1984 and 1985 by various publications …
..and they were taken away by the NCAA because of more major violations than you can shake a stick at.
@Dave What were taken away? Our 3 National Titles? No.
The 84 and 85 seasons? Yes, I acknowledged that in my post…we were on probation for much less than what your program just did.
You have to know that OSU claims bogus championships. For example, you guys finished #2 and #5 in the Coaches/AP poll and LOST your bowl game in 1970, but still somehow claim that as a National Championship.
UF finished #1 in both polls in 1996, so that’s easy.
If you want us to count bogus NCs the same way you do, UF was “awarded” national championship in 1984 and 1985 by various publications …
Nice grasp of Football history there Carl.
We won it all 1996. We were THE National Champions that year. To say we did not win a Title before 2005 is just silly. We beat FSU 52-20 in New Orleans to give Spurrier and Weurffel their national title. OSU actually helped us out by beating Jake Plummer and Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.
We have 3 outright National Titles in the past 15 years. (1996, 2006, 2008)
We could claim our 1984 Season as well (I mean Alabama claims titles with much less merit) Many media outlets voted us #1 in their final poll, but probation from the previous regime left us unable to play in a bowl. (We lost 2 games over the 2 season span)
Our best days are no more than 30 years old. No doubt. But I dont remember much past my first Gator game in 1982, so I dont really care about that. For most of my life we have been a national power, and one could easily say during that 30 years we have been better than OSU. Keep going back in time however far you need to make yourself feel better. I’ll take recent any day.
This program was great Under Galen Hall, He like Urban had some very solid 1 loss teams. Hall’s Gators finished #1 in the SEC in 84 and 85 but also were not awarded titles due to the previous probation.
Ill give you anything before 1983….but for the last 3 decades. No way.
I mean just how far back does one have to go?
So Paul, If I read you right, you nothing but a Johnny Come Lately team. Florida Gators started playing in 1906 and you didn’t win National Championship untill 1996. What was you doing for 90 years?
Ohio State started playing football in 1890 and has won 7 Nathial Championships, 34 Big Ten championships, and 7 Heisman trophy winners.
Florida’s record kind of pales in comparison to the Buckeye’s.
They were making Gatorade, which has the electrolytes that plants crave.
What else would we pour over the heads of our coaches when we win?
30 years is Johnny come lately? Either you are very old or have no current success to cling to. Is Duke basketball Johnny come lately?
How can one brag about something from before they were born? In that case I guess I’ll start claiming titles for after Im dead too….either way they are irrelevant in my lifetime.
And do you guys only play one sport? We have 5 National Titles in the two biggest sports since 1996.
I checked … you’d have to be over 42 years old to say you were alive when OSU won two national championships … and that includes Football and Basketball. 42 years … one national title in the major sports … I take back what I said earlier about Notre Dame … you guys are bigger has-beens than they are.
It was an Idiocracy reference. Don’t get so bent out of shape.
Yeah … ‘Cause I really care about what happened 120 years ago. You’ve won 1 football national championship since I was born, and I’m damn near 40. You guys have done nothing for the last 10 years while UF has won two national championships in football, and two national championships in basketball.
OSU is the definition of “program in decline”. You all are well on your way to being the next Notre Dame, and bunch of has-beens, with nothing to talk about how you used to be a respectable program, and how precise your marching band’s steps are.
Sorry, but I’ll take “currently relevant” over “used to be good” any day.
actually, they pretty much sucked for the first 80 years of their existence.
The only real success came from 2 coaches who where there for what?…10-15 years?
It’s over. Enjoy your last win over the Buckeyes for a very long time. You caught the first 7 loss team from Ohio State in over a hundred years and we will be back on top in the next couple of years.
Dave – Research and facts are your friend. See my post to Carl above about the past 30 years of Florida Football. Anything before I started watching doesn’t matter to me anyway…So I’ll let you guys argue about the “good old days”…I went to my first game in a rainstorm in 1982 as a little boy, and we have been on the national radar during that entire time.
For the past 3 decades (Not 10-15 years as you stated) its not even close. Florida has been superior to OSU.
Hell, I don’t even mind comparing recent history.
Let’s look at the past 10 years.
Guess how many 5 loss seasons Ohio State has had in the past 10 years?
1
Now how many has florida had?
5
Wow yup.. you’re right… got us beat there.
Wanna try 3 loss seasons?
Ohio State 2
florida 7
Damn! got us there too.
Sure are dominating…
whoops sorry 6.. wouldn’t want to cheat ya
Dave – Are you counting last season? The NCAA says you had ZERO wins last year.
Here’s the deal. If you played our schedule you too would have those losses. You prove it come bowl season EVERY time. You guys would be Georgia in the SEC…a middle of the pack team.
We play a tougher schedule than you….thats why the Big 10 gets killed in matchups with the SEC
No SEC fanbase is impressed with your Big 10 regular season record. In the SEC you don’t get a ring for a strong regular season. I didn’t see Bama or LSU or South Carolina or Auburn on you schedule….but I did see Florida.
Rebuilding teams ALWAYS lose multiple games in the SEC. Just look at Auburn this year. Just by the nature of our conference we will lose more games than OSU. Your conference is weak. Your schedule is weak.
Also let me remind you that our coach for 2 of the 5 loss seasons is YOUR new head (case) coach.
Here’s the 10 year stat that matters in this conversation. We have 2 National Titles. We are 2-0 vs. Ohi0 State.
Pointing to your regular season is just another grasp at a moral victory.
…and again I ask…do you guys only play one sport?
I don’t know if Ohio State fans have learned how to do anything with class. They may think they do. There is one thing that they may have learned that you show pretty well; how to be smug.
I can’t breath. The smug is suffocating.
Ohio State is living proof that winners can be losers.
Oh and remind me. Who is currently on probation and a bowl ban? Oh yeah, you. It’s funny that OSU would run any smack at a program that has been as consistently good as UF because we didn’t win big 50 years ago. I guess being good over the past 30 years is recent history and doesn’t merit giving credit to a program that has become elite. I would also bet that the same idiots claiming UF hasn’t earned the right to be proud of our success would consider Duke to be a traditional power in basketball. Guess when they became relevant. About the same time. Your fans are pathetic and as long as you keep running up against the SEC in bowls, you’ll be the tallest midget in our minds. Now run off and be the bully of your little sandbox league. Step foot out here and we’ll knock your teeth in again.
Elite my ass!
Elite teams do not lose 5 games or more 5 different seasons in a 10 year span while they are in their “prime”.
So, you guy’s keep your butt’s kicked by a sub-elite team? What doesn’t make OSU?
Honestly what the fuck do you Gator fans want? Were not going to change each others minds, it’s like beating a dead horse, so go back where you come from so we can get back to our Buckeye business.
Just stop acknowledging them. It’s been a week now.
True.. We should know better by now than to feed the trolls. I’ll let them fade back into oblivion now…
Fair enough Dave and Carl. We’ll continue this argument after we meet again in a bowl game and discuss how yet again your Bucks get curb-stomped by the Mighty Gators. UF owns your pathetic ass football team.
This still going on? I tuned out about comment 140 or so…and I started the whole mess.
You started a monster that keeps getting bigger and bigger.
I seem to have a knack for that sort of thing.
That’s what she said.
Great win over Iniana yesterday, if they could only play like that on the road.
lol osu
The Florida Gators beat you when you were very good (2007, when you were full of yourselves and said we shouldn’t even be on the field with you) and the Florida Gators beat you when you sucked (in 2012 – when we both sucked and you, somehow, thought Urban’s hiring would miraculously carry you to victory).
Bottom line, winners don’t need excuses…..Buckeyes do.
Art Schlicter says he’d bet 10 to 1 that OSU is better…Maurice Clarett says he’d pop a cap in the ass of anyone who says OSU aint better…Woody Hayes hit more linebackers than the OSU line in the title game…Terelle Pryor says he’d sell out his coach AND his university fo’ a $20 prison tat…Jim Tressel says wait til my NCAA coaching ban is up, then I’ll come back and replace Urban when he leaves for his next great once in a lifetime job
You guys are back…really?
A: Never follow an Art Schlicter bet
B: O.K. I’ve got nothing for Clarette. Important to note Clarette was no longer a Buckeye when his troubles began.
C: That linebacker should have known better than to intercept a pass in front of Woody
D: Those tattoos cost way more than $20. Have you priced Tattoos lately?
E: Yeah, I don’t have much faith in Meyer sticking around either. The vest will be back at OSU in an administrative job and we’ll be glad to have him.
It’ hard to believe these gator fans what to start shit again. The Gators won the game big fucking deal, it over we have moved on. The game is nothing but a fleeting thought, get a life.
B: O.K. I’ve got nothing for Clarette. Important to note Clarette was no longer a Buckeye when his troubles began
That’s good comedy there. Clarette had problems before he got to OSU and paying him buckets of cash and turning the blind eye only made them worse
Stop feeding the animals.
