At one point on Saturday, I was preparing to write a post titled, “Just give it to Boise State.” And why not? They’ve gone undefeated and the Buckeyes lost two games - one of which was a blowout. Besides, a Capital One Bowl against a second rate SEC team doesn’t sound all that bad. If the Buckeyes need anything, they need to win a bowl game. Winning a bowl game against an SEC team…all the better.
And then Oregon State decided they really weren’t ready for the Rose Bowl and handed it over to USC.
Suddenly, the Buckeyes are back in the BCS race looking at a possible Fiesta bowl and you’ve got the Phoenix city council licking their chops at the economic stimulus package which just landed in their laps.
But hold on to your Britches Mayor Gordon, there’s more. Since the Big 12 can’t seem to decide a champion without outside help, Texas may be looking for a place to play come BCS selection day. Yeah, a Florida win over Bama could somehow mean a BCS title rematch with Oklahoma/Texas but do you really think they’d allow an all Big 12 championship? (What a ridiculous mess that would be. I can’t tell the Big 12 football scores from their basketball scores.)
You want a big game, put Texas and Ohio State in the Fiesta bowl. That would bring two of the biggest schools in the country with two of the best traveling fan bases to your fair city.
Yeah, the season’s not over and a lot could happen. USC could lose to UCLA (and I don’t even want to try to figure out what that would do). Oklahoma could lose to Missouri but how could you send Texas over Texas Tech to whom they lost. That could open the door for USC or maybe even Penn State.
But that makes my head hurt.
Sorry Boise and Utah. You’ve earned your spot but do you think for a minute that given the chance, the Fiesta Bowl committee will pass on a Texas/Ohio State bowl game? Even if Boise or Utah could pull of the upset, a Utah/Boise vs Texas just doesn’t have the same ring (bling?) as an Ohio State/Texas Fiesta Bowl.
So for now, considering the way the BCS seems to have a penchant for screwing somewhat deserving teams, I’m calling a Texas/Ohio State Fiesta. Sure, they’ll whine and cry in New Orleans because nobody from Boise or Utah is going to travel all the way down there for a bowl game but do you honestly think Mayor Gordon cares about that back in Glendale?
As for the actual football game? I love an Ohio State/Texas matchup. We left that series unresolved a couple of years ago and a chance to settle the score will huge for both teams. And talk about two radically different football divisions. Do they even play defense in the Big 12?
So here’s my bowl picks:
BCS Title: Florida vs. Oklahoma
Fiesta: Ohio State vs. Texas
Rose: Penn State vs. USC
Sugar: Alabama vs. Utah (Boise? - flip a coin)
Orange: Virginia Tech vs. Cinci (wow, there’s a game not to miss)
However, I still wouldn’t mid seeing an Ohio State vs. Georgia Capital One Bowl either. Bowl games are supposed to be played on Jan 1 anyways!

Go Bearcats!!!
I am so tired of the words, “economic stimulus.”
