Great Moments in Sportswriting

I just came across this and it is just too good to pass by. Apparently it was on the Jay Leno show recently.

In a 2002 story about Packer defensive end Joe Johnson leaving the Saints, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal (online) had this to say:

Once the heart and soul of the Saints, an eager contributor to the community, an eight-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl player and arguably the best player on the entire team, Johnson was let go in an ugly business move after last season.

Twenty-two NFL quarterbacks had felt his sack.

What more is there to say?

Michigan State fans excited about tight new uniforms

Michigan State Uniform
Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer demonstrates the difficulties facing this year’s MSU defenseman.

According to Msuspartans.com, Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer seems pretty excited about the new uniforms. Apparently they will be a big help during those post game celebrations.

“The new uniforms still have the Michigan State look and feel, but there are a couple of subtle changes,” Hoyer said. “These uniforms are light, and the fit is nice and tight. It took me 15 minutes to get into full uniform. With the snug fit, it will be difficult for defenders to grab you from behind and pull you down. As a quarterback, I also like the cut around the neck because it allows for a greater range of motion for my head…”

I guess the Michigan State defensive line will have their work cut out for them this year.

Chade Hanne, The Dead Schembechlers, YouTube and Google

Jeff over at the BBC noticed lately that he was getting an unusual amount of hate mail. Something unusual for the month of July.

Then he went to YouTube and did a search for Chade Henne and guess what comes up as the top result?

Why it’s that old favorite, the BBC’s Chade Henne video reel set to the music of…you guessed it…The Dead Schembechlers (may they rest in peace)

But here at the Buckeye Blog, we are not happy to just stop there. I want to see this video come up as the number one hit on Google.

This won’t be easy. Currently, a search for Chad Henne on Google brings the video up at the 10th spot. However, if we continue to link to the YouTube video, and enough of us link, it can and will move up.

And for those who need a little reminder of how much fun we all had last November:

(The video has been viewed more than 100,000 times on YouTube. Amazing)

The Buckeye Man Cave to end all Man Cave’s part II

I put a video up of this before it was finished but after six years and I don’t know how many hours, it is finally done.

This is the stuff dreams are made of:

Next time my wife wants me to move my Ohio State Bobble Heads from the living room, I will remind her of this.

Sports Illustrated names top ten Ohio State athletes (open thread)

Sports Illustrated has named its version of the all time top 10 Ohio State Athletes. I’m not sure who made up the list but I doubt that he/she/they, are true Ohio State fans.

Let’s take a look at the list:

10. Troy Smith
9. Jack Nicklaus
8. Greg Oden
7. Eddie George
6. Katie Smith
5. Jerry Lucas
4. Blaine Wilson
3. Howard Cassady
2. Jesse Owens
1. Archie Griffin

There is no question that narrowing the field to ten is no easy task. I could go either way on the first two or three. However, putting Jack Nicklaus behind Greg Oden…yeah sure. Let’s just say that Greg Oden will never dot the i. Let history work it’s magic before we name a stadium after anyone.

Comments? Who is your #1 Ohio State Athlete?

E. Gorden Gee Returns to OSU; Althletic dept. reform to follow?

I doubt it. The elimination of the Ohio State Athletic dept. that is.

However, I do think yesterday’s announcement of E. Gorden Gee’s return as Ohio State will bring even more credibility and prestige to the proud tradition that is Ohio State sports.

The past ten years have seen an incredible renascence in Ohio State sports. Gee will only help to continue this growth as he brings his high academic standards to the biggest college sports program in the country. I can’t believe that he, Tressel and Matta won’t all be on exactly the same page.

The Columbus Dispatch this morning published an article written by Gee in 2003 when he reformed the athletic program at Vanderbilt in which he refers to the fiefdoms of college athletic programs.

I won’t reprint the article since it is available here. In it he lays out a list of reforms that include things such as requiring core curriculum for college athletes, four year commitments on athletic scholarships, and basing scholarships allowed and t.v. revenue on athletic graduation rates.
